Large US metro areas lost population in 2021

The 2021 census estimates came out like three weeks ago and some not-so-shocking trends are apparent. Almost all large metropolitan areas have seen population decreases after a decade of strong growth. The exception are the metro areas in the sunbelt outside of California. The pandemic and affordability are the biggest reasons for this. The New York Times has a decent article here:

The NYTs points out that NYC, LA, and SF lost a combined total of 700,000 people in one year. IMO it’s a good thing that LA and SF are losing people solely because of access to water. I also don’t know if I agree with their optimistic opinion that cities will bounce back soon. At least not all of them. People are leaving and setting down roots. Don’t know how inclined they’ll be to move back just ‘cuz. Plus they’re leaving the most expensive cities for more affordable ones.
 

This is basically p*rn for conservatives because they can now say that liberal leadership leads to deterioration and point to Census data to back them up. A half truth of course but they’re still gonna run with it.

Which is ridiculous, as a lack of government intervention in the property market and a lack of investment in social and affordable housing has contributed to the housing crisis (fiscal conservative policies), as stock dwindles and prices surge, forcing the middle and lower ends of the pay scale being forced out of the city due to extortionate rents and a lack of affordable homes.
