FfFfFfFF 58,082
Ukraine sources claim the airfield in Moldova's breakway region of Transnistria is getting prepared for receiving aicraft. According to the General Staff of Ukraine, it's not excluded that Transnistria will join the war and launch an offensive against Ukraine from the west, to improve Russia's position in the southern Bug region. LilyLark 10,213
Honestly not surprised. They've completely lost the north and the west and so it makes sense they would focus on the east and south (Russian state media has even started acting like the main focus was also the east). That said, that deranged piece that ran in Russian state media that advocated literal genocide (even academics who have disagreed with calling it genocide before were like "welp, that qualifies as genocide)...that piece (which has been picked up by Russian state TV) seems to be advocating for full occupation of Ukraine. *The RIA article was terrifying...used words like "cleansing the land," said that Ukraine as a country can not exist because it is prone to Nazism, that Ukrainian culture is tainted, etc. A few journalists were remarking that it was scarily like the radio propaganda that happened in Rwanda before the Rwandan genocide. The whole of Moldova is not behind this, just Transnistria (which Russia has been funding separatist movements in for decades). The actual ground is more like this

Neroneau 1,017
Sooo if they’re so sure and saw this coming (everyone did) why don’t they strike that runway already? Just a few hits in the middle of it will impede planes from landing. Whatchu waiting fo? Something bad to happen for Zelenskyy to whine to NATO and EU that they must interfere again? You mixed up the pro-Western Romanian-speaking country of Moldova (country that hosts the biggest number of Ukrainian refugees per capita in the world) with Russian puppet Transnistria. However, you are actually right, if they invade Ukraine, given Transnistria's extreme narrowness & the fact that one can easily reach its western border in a few hours, Ukraine might finally clear Moldova of Russian separatists, however very unlikely EU will get involved. PartySick 172,465
What's the point? Russia might as well be throwing water balloons at a brick wall I mean, they're doing a lot of terrible sh*t. Uprooting people's lives, destroying homes, killing the vulnerable, but they've made like no real progress in weeks with this invasion other than progressively doing more and more inhumane things. With NATO and others solidly aligning with Ukraine and giving them the tools they need to defend their home I highly doubt having a thin strip of disaffected territory join you will help much. If anything it seems like it'd just give Ukrainian farmers another direction to drive their tractors and steal tanks Whimsical bitch
FfFfFfFF 58,082
Yesterday it was announced several Russian citizens with military experience tried to enter Moldova as ''tourists'' (source) This may or may not be related, but kinda suspicious nonetheless. Apparently they did the same thing in Georgia back in the day before the '08 war where they split of Abkhazia, etc. What do you think is going to happen in the next few months? I go back and forth...Clearly, Russia is going to run into supply issues, etc. and eventually economic issues (the ruble is being propped up artificially). Normally, that would prompt unrest from the public and an eventual end to the war...but at the same time, the general public seems to back the war (and comes across as brainwashed, to the point that they are fine with struggling economically) and the state media is sounding increasingly unhinged to the point that journalists are now comparing it to genocide era Rwanda. And if the Russian forces have done to Mariupol what they did to Bucha but on a much wider scale....idk how much longer other countries can sit out despite the threat of nuclear war. One of the things my friends and I were talking about is that Putin comes across as irrational (even if some say by his own standards he is doing this in a rational way). A month ago, I would have never thought it was possible, but the longer this goes on and the more poorly his troops do...I really do wonder if he'll break out a nuke or even go after Poland (Russian state media seems especially fixated on Poland, even more than the Baltics, I've noticed). After the retreat from the north and Russia's change of plans, we now need to see if Russia intends to secure Donbas and a land corridor to Crimea along the Azov Sea, or their ambitions include the whole Novorossiya - aka the complete Kharkiv-Zaporizhzhia-Kherson-Mykolaiv-Odesa axis. Unfortunately, the supply issue are less pronounced in the south compared to the north, as Crimea is full of supplies, secured by the Russians since the 2014 and extremely defensible. 16 minutes ago, LilyLark said: Normally, that would prompt unrest from the public and an eventual end to the war...but at the same time, the general public seems to back the war I very much doubt Putin will be removed from power, generally Eastern Europe doesn't have the habit of revolting, people here are educated to endure and resiliently face the hardships (in all aspects of life, including politics), plus Putin seems to have a firm grip on Kremlin. I think you touched upon something very true, aka that the average Russians are very vulnerable to propaganda. In light of Kremlin propaganda, the average Russians will likely grow resenftul towards the West, not to mention extremely isolated (the Iron Curtain returned, except more to the east). In 2022 we are closer to the break out of WW3 than we have ever been. The risk is there, but I still believe WW3 will not happen here and now. About potential targets in the eastern flank of NATO, I would rank as following: 1) Turkey (reasons: Turkey cuts off Russia from its outpost of influence in the Middle East, which is Syria. The closing of Bosphorus Strait means Russia will struggle to supply its strategically important base at the Mediteranean. Add to this, the historical rivality between Turkey and Russia for the Black Sea, Russia's historical ambition to conquer Constantinopole, also the fact in between Russia and Turkey you have the Caucasus with a dangerous unresolved conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan). 2) the Baltics (reasons: they were integral parts of the Russian Empire for a long time, pragmatically, they can easily be isolated from the rest of NATO if the Russians occupy the tiny strip of land connecting Kalinigrad, Russia exclave to the Baltic sea, with Belarus) 3) Poland (reasons: Poland's affiliation towards the West is very uncomfortable to Russia, not to mention countless historical precedents). 4) Romania (reasons: competing interests in Bessarabia, Russia firmly opposes Moldova's integration in the EU/ NATO and all attempts to get closer to Romania, plus one of Russia's maximalist historical ambitions is to reach the Carpathians, which run through the middle of Romania).
