its honestly shocking to me the consequences Will is facing for his action (as he should).

Its shocking to me because so many others gotten away or just a slap on the wrist with imo worse things.

I don't think anybody is disagreeing with that.

What the point many of us are making is, the Academy, Netflix, Hollywood in general is reacting to this with a sternness that was not shown to people like Woody Allen or Roman Polanski, both child rapists. Are you really going to sit here and tell me that what Will Smith did is deserving of more severe consequences than what those two men did?

Will did it in public view so its pretty clear of the context and what exactly happend. Allen and Polanski were all off-camera so apologists can pretend they don't know about it, lie about what actually happened, or lie that ~the situation is a lot more nuanced than you think~

And a gun takes a fraction of a second to shoot so what’s your point? He assaulted someone, end of conversation. I don’t care what someone says, violence is not & should not be an option.

Who brought guns up? Did Will SHOOT Chris Rock too? Please do not conflate human mannerisms with actually human-engineered handheld killing machines.

And the fact that people keep hiding behind “violence is never ok” like momma the excuses excusing

…is this serious? Lmfao I was pointing out that the length of the assault doesn’t change the fact that it was assault :yennefer:

Aren't people taking the slap a little too serious? I think if he apologised and if chris accepts his apology, then we should not go on making more fuss about it. It's good that Will realises he can't get away with this easily, but we all make mistakes.

A MAN WALKED ONTO THE STAGE AT THE OSCAR’s AND HIT ANOTHER PERSON.   Some of y’all really need to check your decency compass.  Violence against another person, especially in such a public fashion, should have been dealt with immediately instead of this assailant being allowed to remain and receive a damn award.  .We have to start calling out these things and making there be repercussions or our specify will continue to sink into the gutter.

Serves him right. Not taking action against Will Smith will only normalise physical aggression because something offended you. We all have different thresholds for what's tolerable and what isn't. The moment you normalise or accept hitting someone because they didn't like something, you can open the floodgate for justifying other instances of attack and that's not how society should run. We are a civilization that have the ability to communicate with one another with words and that is always how it should be. The only time attacking someone is justified in my view is for defense or retaliation to someone attacking you.

I'm still disgusted that no one went up to help Chris Rock and Will Smith got am award and a standing ovation. Sure he's a good actor and deserves the award, but Chris is much more deserving of respect as a human being for how he dealt with the situation.

Yes it's unacceptable what Will did, but Chris his joke was also painful. NO that doesn't make the slap justified. Actions like these should have consequences of course. I think it would have been reasonable if the Oscars made him leave the event. However then he couldn't make his apology, if he was sent away. He still deserves his award though.

I don't know what more people want now. Do we have to talk about this forever? Do we have to boycot all his movies now? I don't see why we have to be so bitter.

Y'all act like Will Smith damaged a whole generation and single-handedly normalized violence. Get a grip and get off twitter for a while, lol

If Chris Rock has already moved on from this situation, forgiven him, and doesn’t want to press charges, why can’t the rest of the world? How are we still talking about this? :saladga:

The white fragility is too much on this site sometimes. Will slapped a man. He didn't punch him, he didn't beat him up. If it would've been a comedic gag and planned nobody would be batting an eye and in fact would probably be commending Chris Rock and Will for putting on a convincing gag but because it was real suddenly it is the most "traumatizing" and "violent" thing anybody has ever seen. Might I ask how many movies have been nominated and awarded at the Oscars for depicting physical violence and other human atrocities? Did it bother you then? Did you know for certain it was all an act and no harm was actually inflicted? Did you really care? The issue here is the same as it always has been and always will be with white America (and the rest of the world): black people are expected to act a certain way that goes against stereotypes. The moment a black person steps outside of the role and portrays attributes unfairly and discriminatorily attributed to them by these racist stereotypes they are met with double hostility and criticism for the most minimal of acts and offenses. Where is this outrage for 300+ years of enslavement? Where is this outrage for colonialism? Where is the outrage for these regime change wars in the Middle East? Where is the outrage for the CIA backed coups in South America and Ukraine? Actual human atrocities nobody blinks an eye but God forbid a rich black man who is being emotionally tortured by his wife in the public eye reacts to a comment made about said wife in her defense. Will Smith is not Kanye West, he is not R. Kelly, or Bill Cosby. Please direct your self-righteous and indignant anger at some other negro to fulfill your internalized racist desires. It's sickening to see.
