Absolutely. It’s a landmark album for that reason alone. It’s not only his last ever recording after an incredibly long career, but he also sounds great.  I actually can’t think of a more deserving AOTY winner.

It's nothing to do with the genre. If it was an album of original jazz songs I'd appreciate it a lot more (actually I'm waiting for the day she does this).

But it's just a bunch of covers of songs that have already been hugely popular for a century, with generally traditional instrumentation. And while they may be solid and well done covers, there's nothing fresh or creative about them.

And even the pairing of Gaga with Tony has already been done since 2011, the novelty has definitely worn off.

 

As a personal project, I'm sure it was hugely fulfilling and meaningful for both of them, to work on what they both knew was their final album together. But as an artistic work on a global scale, is it really the best album of the whole year? Come on, it's absolutely not.

I really don’t think original jazz songs would be better.  Jazz is a genre about interpretation and even fully devoted jazz musicians regularly release albums of standards. Recording “standards” from the “great American songbook” is a subgenre of itself, it isn’t really right to even call them “covers” like in the pop world. They don’t belong to one artist anymore they are now “standards”. They’re classic songs that people want to hear reinterpreted all the time.  And who cares if they’ve done it before. AOTY is not about novelty. It’s about the records that people found the most meaningful. And for all the reasons I’ve already posted I think this more than qualifies.

It probably would get nominated if they followed the rules being observed this year. If I remember correctly, some jury choices were replaced with the popular choices for AOTY.
