thedirtymonster 793
There needs to be some sort of intervention when it comes to homelessness and their encampments. With homelessness comes crime, drugs, and a multitude of other things that make a community unsafe. Is destroying their camps the most humane way to do it? Probably not, but these homeless encampments aren't legal, and the city legally does have the grounds to clean them up.

Maybe they should fully fund programs to actually help these people get on their feet and become more productive members of society rather than taking a backhoe to what little they DO have and telling them "go be poor somewhere else". Feed them, give them clean clothes, put a roof over their head, and I guarantee the vast majority of them go on to live better, self sufficient lives. They just need a hand. Ceres 3,376
I don’t know how the homeless population is in NY but in my city we have programs and shelters/ places to go and our homeless would rather stay in the streets. It’s a lot of drug abuse and mental Illness that’s causing the homeless by me. Wish the NY mayor made better decisions bc displacing the homeless isn’t really a solution to anything, they’re going to find shelter somewhere nearby ✧ ✧ ✧

I 100% agree with you, however, I lived in Portland, OR for many years and they have tons of programs and housing for the homeless...yet the issue is continuing to get worse. It's a complex issue and there has to be a multi-angle approach. Studies have shown that a lot of them actually make more money panhandling than they would at minimum wage jobs. Some, not all, of these people choose to stay in poverty. It's a really eye-opening experience living close to them for so long, having to step over them when I'm walking to the bus, threatening to call the police when they continue to loiter at my job and stink up our lobby. I do have empathy, but my perspective has changed a lot over the years...

It is within the city's rights and they should do something against homelessness but this doesn't make the problem go away. It's simply about visibility here. In fact, literally destroying all their possessions will only make their situation worse and probably drive people into criminality. If the mayor/the city really wanted to change the situation, they would get on with some long overdue action targeting the city's housing issues and make some effort to get homeless people into mental health support and job programs. It's usually not that those people don't want to work, in most cases they literally can't participate in society anymore because of mental issues. Descandalize that and help. This is probably a very unpopular opinion but clearing out camps is necessary at times. Jackson street running through Seattle’s international district had a very dangerous one a few months back. It absolutely needed to be cleared out. I would take the 14 bus line through it and felt very unsafe many times because of the people that would get on and off. These were people that could switch on you in an instance because they were on drugs and severely mentally ill. The kind of people rehab centers wouldn’t even want to take in because of the threat they posed to their staff. Eventually started driving to work because it was just stupid to endanger myself like that. Until we get a better system for housing these people, sweeps will be a necessary thing to do to keep the regular citizens safe.

Guest
In a country that values money more than people, this seems like the next logical step. Get in debt to go to school, to go to the hospital and then if u can’t handle having 3 jobs to surivive and ur on the streets, well let’s destroy your encampment. You as a human being mean nothing unless you have money. America

I can see how those areas would kinda fester into something worse. It's just so disheartening that more often than not, people who are down on their luck really are just brushed aside. Instead of sending mental health experts with offers of temporary assisted living and the opportunity to build a new life they send cops and heavy machinery then build spikes on everything If people are too mentally ill for even a rehab center than they need to be baker acted or something, not left to roam the streets. It's just one symptom of society's epic failure to care about the average person I guess. Whimsical bitch
