Canada is raising the Federal Minimum Wage to $15.50/H ($12.15/H in USD) effective April 1st from $15/h

The Federal minimum wage only applies to jobs in sectors under Federal Control which includes public sector jobs but also private jobs it its an industry that is regulated federally (such as banks or inter-Provincial transportation for example)

Most sectors and jobs in private sector however are under Provinces labor laws meaning the Provinces minimum wage applies not the this Federal although most major Provinces have minimum wage near a simmilar level anyway

is this good news for canadians?

If u work in one of the regulated jobs and made minimum wage yes

Tho the increase is basically just covering inflation. Its not really a real increase in real value

What surprised me more is that there is one at all. I did not realize there was a federal minimum wage that some jobs & sectors fall under
