Covid-19 Still Not Over: WHO Confirms DeltaCron Variant

The World Health Organization this week confirmed the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant dubbed "deltacron" - a hybrid strain that combines both the delta and omicron variants.
As the portmanteau suggests, Deltacron is a Covid variant that contains elements of Delta and Omicron – in other words, it contains genes from both variants, making it what is known as a recombinant virus.

Gisaid says the variant has been identified in several regions of France and appears to have been circulating since the start of the year. “Genomes with a similar profile have been also identified in Denmark and the Netherlands,” Gisaid says.

There have also been reports of Deltacron being detected in the US, and about 30 cases have been detected in the UK, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). The i newspaper said the first cases of person-to-person transmission of Deltacron in the UK were expected to be confirmed this week.

Experts have been quick to stress that recombinant variants are not uncommon, and that Deltacron is not the first and will not be the last to occur for Covid.

With only a small number of cases of Deltacron so far identified, however, there is not yet enough data about the severity of the variant or how well vaccines protect against it.

But that does not mean the variant is a reason to panic: Previous waves of Delta and Omicron, as well as vaccinations, mean there is likely to be at least some protection against this variant.

If it's been around since the beginning of the year (so around 2.5 months now), then I'm guessing it's not much more dangerous compared to previous variants? Otherwise it would have already led to a huge increase in cases if the vaccines and precautions were not very effective, no? Let's hope it ends up being less severe or dies down like many other variants tbh.

I read that this variant is rare and likely carries the severity of Omicron which if you’re vaccinated wasn’t too high. I mean we have vaccines being modified I’m sure and other treatments. If people still refuse to get their shots, have fun getting sick.

I stayed home (ACTUALLY STAYED HOME, didn’t even go to a supermarket) for 1 year 9 months and 3 days. It was so scary going back to the office and I would come home daily to shower in close-to-boiling water and disinfectant. It took me a good 4-5 months to become OK with the outside world. No variant is going to stop me anymore. I can’t do it again.

I am triple vaccinated and on a daily vitamin mix of C, D and Zinc. I can’t do much more.

Bring on the Chromatica Ball. I don’t care!
