Outrage as serial killer Jack the Ripper becomes a woman

A ‘cheap and damaging’ International Women’s Day exhibit has been condemned for making Jack the Ripper into a woman.

For one day only, notorious London serial killer Jack The Ripper has become Jackie The Ripper. The change was announced by the London Dungeon to celebrate International Women’s Day. The attraction, which draws thousands of tourists every year, asked “was the notorious killer actually a woman?” and headed the exhibit “Jack becomes Jackie The Ripper”, turning the spotlight onto convicted murderer Mary Pearcey, who was named a Jack The Ripper ‘suspect’ in the 1930s.

A London Dungeon spokesperson said: “With men often stealing the spotlight when it comes to the ghastly and gory crimes, we wanted to give ladies their dues for International Women’s Day. Rather than the usual honouring, we’ve given the day a London Dungeon twist while telling a story that many may never have heard before.”

However, the domestic abuse charity Refuge criticised the Dungeon for its controversial decision, whilst social media users have labelled the stunt ‘horrendous’, ‘obscene’ and ‘beyond offensive’.

I mean it’s not that difficult to understand, they’re just telling the story of whoever Mary Pearcey is instead, but have called it Jackie the Ripper. It’s definitely a choice to of done it on IWD but then again for somewhere like the London dungeon, that is entirely about macabre history, when else would they do it?

Mary Pearcey, who was an actual female serial killer and a possible suspect in the Jack the Ripper case, is getting her own exhibit at a macabre tourist attraction about serial killers.

Once you look past the headline, it's not shocking at all.

London Dungeon are using this to bring attention to their business $, Refuge is using it as a way to bring attention their cause $, The Mirror is using it to drive clicks to their site $ - and everyone here is playing their part as a cog in the silly outrage machine.

For anyone unfamiliar the London dungeon is a tourist attraction, it's a tongue in cheek look at the dark history of London by using humour and grossness as well as jumpscares and sets etc, it's always been cheeky like this.
