From what I have read and researched, yes for a short amount of time like if you need to go change/freshen up, use the restroom, or go get food. The idea is you do not lose your spot in line. From what I understand it has to be short periods of time and not frequent. You have to spend most of the day actually there in line or you will lose your spot.
