But honestly I still dont get what's the main point of NFTs except from being a cashcow

If you'd like to see NFT projects that made positive impact in the community, look at Axie Infinity. It's a massive ambitious project that brought Play-To-Earn NFTs to center stage in developing countries during the pandemic. That thing helped me survive 2021 without spending anything but time because NFT owners would be happy to sponsor your play-to-earn career. It's not perfect because developers were too slow to adapt important mechanisms. Dont take this as financial advice. It's just a fascinating direction NFTs can take.

I loathe the energy-gobbling NFT casino that exists today but it could give artists a new revenue stream for little to no environmental impact when blockchain technologies are upgraded down the line. I'd love to create collectibles in the future.

I just saw a video explaining the whole thing and now I dont understand how can someone even think buying an NFT is a smart idea

People are buying mainstream NFTs to gamble their money. Some with too much money just do it to collect. It's the RECEIPT/contract of ownership/license representing a JPG that is collected, not the art itself because every NFT buyer knows the image can be downloaded. But take for example NFTs that are used for gaming. Those NFTs could have unique utility on one game platform. Sure anyone can download the GIF that represents that NFT, but if you own that thing, you can use it to earn resources on the game (for example Axie Infinity)

a single search on axie infinity shows me that they have produced over 1.5 BILLION kilograms of carbon emissions. (for reference, they’d have to plant 24.5 million trees to offset that.)

regardless of the positive impact on communities, it’s killing our planet plain and simple. to get to a point where blockchain technology is effective means we’re going to damage our planet irreparably in the process.

NFTs are stupid. no matter their purpose. the current emissions & damage they’re doing is enough, why let it continue? i’m sure there’s other alternatives.

Hold on, apparently trademarking means people can’t use her likeness for NFTs or make them in her name

But honestly with every celeb I thought had genuine activism getting into this, I wouldn’t be surprised if she does get into it :air:

that makes sense
I remember back in the day Bey and Jay trademark Blue Ivy name so no one could use it for commercial purpose.

Hope she just do it to stop people from making a billie eilish nft market as long as it's polluting so much.

That's the problem. A single search which you probably barely skimmed. If I may guess where  the 24.5 million trees figures came from, it's from this website https://nftclub.com/eco-impact-of-nfts/ which if you've read in its current form says that Axie has saved 24.5 million trees in offset by migrating to its own blockchain.

This Business Insider article quoted the research before NFTClub issued a correction:
https://www.businessinsider.co.za/axie-infinity-has-highest-carbon-emissions-among-nft-collections-2022-2

Here's what the BI story said:
"All other collections studied produced less than a third of this figure combined," the researchers said, estimating Axie Infinity would need 25.4 million trees to offset its emissions and become carbon neutral.

Meanwhile, the research they cited clarified that's the amount Axie Infinity "has saved" by migrating.
https://nftclub.com/eco-impact-of-nfts/

On April 29th 2021 Axie Infinity started it's migration to the Ronin sidechain, away from the Ethereum Layer 1 Blockchain. Up to this point there had been an estimated 336,764 sales causing 27.7m kg of CO2 requiring an offset of 461,951 trees.

The Ronin network uses 0.0000015 kg CO2 per transaction an enormous amount less than the Ethereum Layer 1 Blockchain.

To date there have been 18,576,109 sales in the Axie Infinity collection, on Ethereum this would have produced 1.5 billion kg CO2 and would require 25.3 million trees to offset.

Yahoo! news echoed the Business Insider article and had this appendix
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/axie-infinity-nfts-25-4-162810313.html

Editor's note: A previous version of this story incorrectly named Axie Infinity NFTs as the biggest carbon emitter. NFT Club based this on an assumption that the tokens are on the ethereum blockchain, but Axie Infinity was moved to the Ronin chain. NFT Club has since removed Axie Infinity from its list.

----

Axie Infinity's migration predates its huge boom in daily users when June 2021 came.

What this tells us that the technology to make NFTs less damaging already exists. Ethereum's Proof of Work is the problem. And this is not unique to ETH, btw. Any blockchain that employs Proof of Work, that includes Bitcoin, has massive power consumption. Solutions to this are approached in many different ways like renewable energy and ZK rollups.

These are not the alternatives you want to exist because they're still called NFTs but the underlying technology and energy requirement are quite different.

I would ask you to keep an open mind when learning about blockchain technologies. It's easy to call them stupid and damaging. NFTs are the easiest target and I truly do not appreciate how environmentally damaging its mainstream form today is (mostly on ETH's blockchain) and will never imagine spending money in its current form. But before dogpiling in the anti-NFT anti-Crypto circlejerk at least be in a perspective that genuinely tries to learn.

"Take “Space Cat,” an NFT that’s basically a GIF of a cat in a rocket heading to the Moon. Space Cat’s carbon footprint is equivalent to an EU resident’s electricity usage for two months, according to the website cryptoart.wtf. That website used to let people click through the estimated greenhouse gas emissions associated with individual NFTs until creator Memo Akten took it down on March 12th. Akten, a digital artist, had analyzed 18,000 NFTs and found that the average NFT has a carbon footprint somewhat lower than Space Cat’s but still equivalent to more than a month’s worth of electricity for a person living in the EU."

This article is the funniest thing I've seen in a while xD As much as I hate NFTs and its lack of sense for their existence the information in the article proves nothing. Following that logic ANYONE holding a phone right now and charging it simultaneously contributes far more GREATLY to the decay of the climate of our planet.

How about you guys google how much damage private jet flights cause?

the difference between a smart phone and an NFT/private jet is that smart phones are almost essential in today's society. they're capable of almost anything needed to survive in the digital world without having to shell out nearly thousands on a computer :bear:

whilst an NFT is not essential and it's just pollution generated for somebodies wallet :huntyga: and you bring up private jets as if the majority of this website are using private jets? what's the point in googling private jets? :poot:

sometimes people (me) can't afford to be totally green but still support the cause and do what they can via other means (like recycling)
