There are too many Americans who are one or more of the following which would make them ineligible for military service: 1. Not Educated to an Acceptable Degree: There are some services that will accept recruits with a GED but generally speak, they will not look twice at someone who does not have at least a high school diploma. Beyond that, all recruits must pass the Armed Forces Qualifications Test and if you lack a proper education, the statistics show that passing this test is not likely. 2. They Have a Criminal Record: Any criminal record will do. The armed forces do not allow anyone with a conviction on their record to join active service. That means over 3.4 million people are not eligible. That also doesn't take into account the amount of people who are currently in prison. In the days of the draft, men who were in prison were allowed to serve, and that would not be the case anymore. 3. Health Issues: The medical conditions that keep one from active service is ever expanding. Asthma, diagnosed mental health issues, ADHD, heart murmurs, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular conditions, etc. all make someone ineligible for service. Keep in mind that military positions are completely exempt from following the Rehabilitation Act that usually protects someone from being denied employment due to a disability. 4. Inability to Pass a Drug Test: Many, many, many Americans simply couldn't pass one. If they can't pass one, they can't enlist. 5. Familial Composition: If someone is a single parent, a sole heir, etc. then they are not eligible to be drafted. This was not commonplace in the days of the draft, but now more than ever the definition of a "family" has changed. It would eliminate a not insignificant portion of the population from the draft. 6. Unchangeable Body Structure: If someone is too tall, too short, their feet are flat, or have any conditions that pose a risk to performance, then they are not service eligible. Beyond that, there isn't a need for the draft anymore. Voluntary enlistment has been at a historical high since 9/11 despite the military's promotional efforts saying otherwise. We already have one of the largest militaries in the world, and we are now in league with the European Union. During the world wars, there was no existing coalition between the world's superpowers. The Allied and Axis powers both were comprised of countries that were simply agreeing to fight together, there was no obligation for them to. That is no longer the case. If America is at war, the armies of the European Union are at war with them. Even if our own voluntary enlistments were down, we'd have the military might of Europe to balance it out. There is no nation on earth that can raise an army large enough to take on the US, the UK, Canada, and the EU at once. Even if Russia and China and North Korea formed a new Axis, it still would not be possible. The draft can also now be challenged legally and would most likely not hold up in the supreme court. And finally, modern warfare makes having a mass military like we have all but redundant. We don't need an army the size that we have even now with the tech we have. Wars are no longer primarily fought one-on-one on a battle field. That still happens, but ground, face to face engagements are now small scale and it's almost unheard of for a ground offensive to be launched without the assistance of technology. Even if another world war broke out, it would look nothing like it did in the last two world wars. TL;DR: the draft is never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever coming back in the US.
