Putin is trying to make some "Lebensraum" arguments (just like he did with the annexation of the Krim 8 years ago). He's claiming that the regions there are important to Russian culture and that the people there are of predominantly Russian ethnicity, so Russia (in his opinion) has "valid" historical claims over those specific regions of the Ukraine. Of course... these are insane opinions to hold. Just as an analogy: If a German politcian ever dared to say something similar about... Alsace or Pomerania, their head would be on the chopping block ASAP. Not just because of the insanity, but also because this is how Hitler justified invading Poland, Netherlands, Belgium, France and anexxing Austria. The truth is that Russia is a dwindling super power, whose former allies all increasingly are eager to join an inhearently Anti-Russian military pact (NATO). As of now, Russia's only military ally is Belarus and China to a very limited extent. The Russian elites, aka the Russian goverment feel their power slipping away, they're threatened by the continous presence of the US military near almost every border it has in Europe. He scoffs at sanctions because he will win Ukraine which was the breadbasket of the USSR and is also very rich in coal. He will not stop at those two states in eastern Ukraine because the rest of Ukraine wants to join NATO. He knows Biden is weak so he will reconstitute the USSR very quickly. Once he clobbers Ukraine really badly the other countries will fall in line as soon as he asks because they don't want to suffer the same fate. He can get them all back except the three Baltic states who are already part of NATO. Nobody will stop him. Just my opinion. I hope I'm wrong. I live outside the space time continuum. Hide contents And also China is encouraging this to keep the West from paying attention to China Idk if China is really "encouraging" it, they're 100% thankful that Russia has now taken the global limelight in order to play the villain again, but China (via trade) is way more dependant on the US and Europe than it is from Russia nowadays. In the long term... they're gonna drop Russia like a hot potato if sanctions are gonna become more severe. How did we all know that Putin wanted to invade Ukraine before Christmas and yet he’s still been able to go ahead? I swear western media is reporting on this to make it seem like we’re going into WW3 because of the amount of money they’re making. Imagine how many views they get scaremongering people into thinking the west is going to war with Russia. I just can’t see anything happening apart from Putin getting a slap on the wrist and Western countries imposing sanctions on Russia like they already have many of times.
