Here's an article about this:

https://digitalcommons.wcl.american.edu/jgspl/vol22/iss4/3/?fbclid=IwAR309QjLr9Nk2WOH0o7BVbA7Kpgv2GfMMLGnTJYUKh5NaHVySw-l1M7ttkk

In fact, according to production companies, it is "more financially responsible to hire white actors over actors of other races".

So let us retire this tired rhetoric, next.

Also, can EVERYONE in this thread please go read the article and get a bit more educated before making claims like... this one?

Thanks.

How is it a race based casting if for example when we speak of LOTR books and later movies there Are no people of color there. Books Are 80 Years Old and if you Are making a show about it be true to the content.

And if I were to be asian, black or white I would be more happy to be Casted, nominated or winner based on my talent, work etc. Rather than be there to just make it a little more diverse

You obviously don't want to understand at all, so I don't think we'll get anywhere. Hope you can get educated instead of being... this, though.

So long ggd, it was nice while it lasted.

Having different opinion does not mean someone is not educated or hasn’t looked into the certain subject. You Hide behind your “ openness “ but actually you Are very judgemntal and obviously not OPEN for different opinions and accepting that not Everybody Thinks Like you.

For example I never Said I will not Watch this show or that I do not cheer for actors who Are not white in Award shows of I think they deserved it and that they were Amazong playing that part. You flat out called me racist just for argumenting different to you.

What does that make you?

It's not a problem. Race becomes illogical if it's historical movie, for example if you change Joan of Arc as black it would make no sense, because back in the day in France there weren't black people there. But you could still make a movie with it, movies are free, art is pure freedom you can do anything, it's just that the audience will have a hard time believing it. And it's the whole basis of a story and a movie, make-believe. But when it comes to Harry Potter or LOTR, the race does not matter, if it's not part of the setting, then it doesn't matter. You can change Harry as an asian boy, and Hermione as an indian, it doesn't change anything, therefore if you have a backlash it is most likely just racism

this is ridiculous, how can you even showcase tour talent and work if you barely get cast at all in big productions, and the roles you get are stereotyped or pigeonholed, what diversification does is give them a shot, a role that a regular white person does can ben easily done by a POC and even better, what does it make you think it was just for the sake of it? you were there when they were cast? you think that by default they aren't chosen by their talents? talk about preconceived notions

I don't want to come across as attacking you but can we stop calling acceptance of identities other than white and straight "woke culture"? It is a term coined by racists/phobics in order to disparage others, and thus has negative connotations attached to it. Woke culture is not real, it's just that we hold people accountable for their shitty behavior now.

Ah, I wasn't aware of that. Will certainly not use that term anymore, thx!

He was a British man who was born at the end of the 19th century and grew up in a predominantly white society… It’s a bit preposterous to judge him by today’s standards, especially when his work is all about love and togetherness. Just saying.

Well I do 200.gif

It’s been a looooong time since I watched lotr and I have to say, I’m shocked there were no black people in them. Like, not even as extras? Really?

Color me shocked. I am not surprised there is backlash, the same fandom was in a huge uproar (many years ago) when a scene leaked of Arwen (one of the two 'main' female characters in the original movies, out of only 3 women) fighting in the second film's major battle because it wasn't in the books. The scene, of course, got deleted.

The LoTR fandom should be more concerned with the quality of the upcoming series and why everything looks like a digital backdrop. That aside, Black people deserve to be represented in the fantasy genre a lot more - and not just be used as 'token casting' in franchises that never made a place for them to begin with.

There is so much culture, religion and land representing Black people that can be used as inspiration. Viola Davis is starring in a new film called The Woman King. I'm not sure if it is fantasy too, but it seems like a promising start!

Wow so they also sexist

Tolkien is the fantasy GOAT, but like a lot of white guys born in the 1800s, his writing and world building had inherent racial bias towards white people. It makes total sense to simultaneously celebrate his work while correcting those aspects for the modern day.

I wonder if this means that they’ll be in other parts of Middle-Earth this time around. I THIIIINK Tolkien described an area south of Mordor where there’s deeper skin toned people. I do hope instead of injecting a POC character somewhere they’ve never been seen before, use it as an opportunity to travel somewhere else that hasn’t been as explored yet in the movies or put in characters that travelled from different areas that haven’t been seen. That would be cool!

Or if they’re doing a “color-blind”casting method, they can just say that too I guess.

Not as men, elves or dwarves (noticeable) at least. Though, they probably wanted the contrast to be huge between good and evil:

:yennefer:

Edit. Actually the men of evil were poc in the films (riding the Oliphaunt etc.)
