I live grace but her hot takes about award season rarely make ANY sense lmfao. I also don’t love how she spent most of the best actress segment talking about how k stew “STOLE” gaga’s spot, first off as if ANYONE had a guaranteed nom, and second off as if the most surprising nomination in the category wasn’t penelope cruz :bear: she’s just further contributing to this nasty stan war that some people have going on and it’s unnecessary imo…

anyways that being said she’s right nobody’s gonna watch them!

EGOT2027

imagine passing up the opportunity to celebrate a critically acclaimed performance that survey after survey showed was the main reason people went back to movie theaters to see a drama for the first time in three years. even folks over 50 cited gaga as the reason for showing up (not al pacino, etcetera). i personally was shocked to see a packed theater of all different ages and types of folks both when i saw this movie in a big city and then again when i saw it in a small town.

commercial success and ratings shouldn’t be the reason for nominations, but when virtually all 10 movies are movies that 2/3 of the country hasn’t seen, that’s a problem. the whole point of expanding BP to ten was to try and celebrate some movies outside of the nyc/LA/film twitter/indie world

I do agree that there’s no huge, shocking nominations to get people to watch. Plus, the show’s ratings have been down considerably in the last few years.

I'm shocked she didn't say Jessica Chastain put a gun to Gaga's head and told her to give her the nomination spot

the only problem is that people don't watch enough quality cinema... I know we are on a fan forum, but HOG is nowhere near top 10 best movies of the year.

I mean, I agree (and I liked Gucci) but there's some truth to the point that the field expanded for that very reason...and yet they still ignore popular movies for the most part. Dune and Don't Look Up were the only hits (DLU might have been on Netflix but it was clearly widely streamed)...they ignored the critically acclaimed In the Heights and The French Dispatch...both of which made more money than 90% of the other nominees. By COVID standards, those two films were arguably "hits" too (not so much as Gucci, but still). And not to sound Trump-like, but those films (despite having acclaim) definitely weren't the favorites of the more "elitist" type of critics.

Besides trying to make the best picture field less elitist, it was also an attempt to improve diversity. And yet films like Respect, Passing, In the Heights etc. were all snubbed. for films that had less critical acclaim.

Edited: And I know people were claiming WSS as a hit for diverse movies, but it was written and directed by white men based on a story that some frankly found problematic way back in the day before problematic even became a hot topic word. Meanwhile, Lin-Manuel had three hits (Tick Tick Boom, Encanto, and In the Heights)...all critically acclaimed, particularly the last two, and nada.

So many people on twitter were acting unprofessional asf and trying to fan the flames of a stan war for hits. Like at least I expect that **** from Grace but others...I was surprised.
