The other awards are separate from the Oscars and can only be an indicator, not a strict rule for Oscar nominations.
flyaway 15,350
They did that on purpose so that Gaga will oblitarate everyone with her next role. She's already working on that.
StrawberryBlond 14,881
It was hard to say who really "took" the spot that was seemingly made for Gaga since it all comes down to personal perception of acting. But I base how likely/unlikely it is for someone to get nominated based on how many nominations/wins they've had across the board of awards academies. I've counted that Penelope won 4 awards (Venice Film Festival, LA Film Critics Association, National Society of Film Critics and San Diego Film Critics). Which isn't bad but what is unusual is that she really wasn't nominated for many of the same awards that the other big 5 (Gaga, Jessica, Olivia, Nicole and Kristen) were being nominated for, her absence at these is very evident and her complete lack of presence at all the major awards (Golden Globes, SAGs, Critics Choice and BAFTAs) but yet managing to snag an Oscar nomination is the part that is truly surprising. But then, there were 2 other nominees who were also a bit of stretch as well. Kristen was an obvious choice as she got nominated for and won so many awards however, she's hardly an awards darling or gained high respect from critics, to put it mildly. And Nicole's performance has proved very divisive and I was shocked to discover that she's only won 2 awards for this role thus far (GG and AACTA award). And considering that the GG's aren't really taken seriously by everyone and she was the only Australian nominated for an Australian award (I notice this ceremony is notorious for always awarding Australians when they get nominated), both these wins aren't even all that credible. So, if anyone shouldn't really be here, it's her, ultimately. For what it's worth, Gaga's won 3 acting awards. She was therefore basically just as worthy of a nomination as Penelope and certainly more than Nicole.
MelbHawker 6,583
Cruz’s performance deserved a nomination, it was definitely not unexpected. I hope this fanbase can one day stop placing so much emphasis on awards nominations etc. when it comes to Gaga. She’s been showered with praise all awards season. She’s not entitled to a nomination because of who she is, or because she turned in a solid performance. No actress is. Missing out on a nomination doesn’t devalue her performance either.
