Yes, which makes it more impressive. The top 2 vote getters automatically nab a nomination; the rest are decided upon by the jury. A huge chunk of BAFTA voters also vote for the Oscars, and Gaga was almost certainly one of the ones decided upon by the voters versus the jury. Basically, it means that the actual voters (as in SAG, Australian Academy, etc.) have a lot of love for her performance. Gags being nominated is almost less shocking than the names left off...the fact that Olivia, Nicole, Jessica, etc. all missed means that among BAFTA voters Gaga has more support. Chastain and Colman also missed out at the Australian Academy. A fairly substantial section of Oscar voters are British and Australian, so Colman and Chastain missing out on both means there is nowhere near the groundswell of support some thought there was (particularly for Colman). Both could miss....a lot of people thought Chastain could miss but Colman missing would be shocking. I still think Colman gets in, but Chastain is almost certainly out at this point. *Honestly, shocked...and not saying this to hate. I thought Gaga was more or less a lock for a nom, but I figured she would miss BAFTA and had no chance of winning....but the fact that she was one of the top 2 at BAFTA means there's a groundswell of support for her. If Gaga wins BAFTA, she's definitely in the Top 2 for Oscars. The UK delegation for the Oscars (which is mostly composed of British Academy votes) is the largest outside of US. If Gaga wins both SAG and BAFTA, 100% Academy Award-winning actress. Regardless, Gaga is a lock for Oscars nomination. Not that Gaga got the nomination (I was expecting her to), but who she's going to be up against took everyone's predictions and shredded them in a blender. To see Gaga being the only one of the same 5 names that have been banded around for award contention is a turn up for the books. It's very rare to see a big awards show not keep in line with what its fellow big award shows are doing so this is putting us in uncertain territory. But based on who she's up against, it looks like she's the frontrunner, which I didn't think possible.
