The latter, I guess.

It's a vaccine. It meant to build antibody in you when injected, so HIV virus is not deadly anymore. The way how other vaccines works, from regular flu to polio. And of course, the latest ones, vaccine for Covid.

I think it’s neither it’s a preventative thing. Like get the vaccine and you may not contract HIV when exposed to it etc

nvm I think it would also help reduce the impact (treatment) as well, just like with Covid and like the other user said

so … for these human trials does that mean people take this vaccine and then willingly get exposed to HIV?

They probably give a small dose?but i just dont see other way to test it..

Its an mRNA vaccine– they'll be measuring how many antibodies and immunogens are created. Essentially it is a measure of the immune response without an infection.

Really hoping people don’t get too comfortable with this.

The whole “we can do whatever we want because there’s a vaccine/cure now” is a mindset that has really plagued this species.

Tbh. If ppl stop worrying about HIV more wrekless behavious may lead to an explosion of other STIs

Yes it would be great if they find a cure and I hope they do im just saying lets not f*ck it up

But i guess the question is would it be as effective as polio or hepatitus type vaccines or flu or covid type vaccines?

Considering many vaccines generally stop infection completely i find it interesting how in covid and flus they generally are only garanteed to prevent severe illness

I lived most of my glory days in fears of getting HIV and that totally ruined my sexual life ... I get to a point of stopping having sex for few years now cause i can't keep an erection while using a condom .

So this is a really good news for me .

I mean you should still wear a condom regardless, HIV is not the only thing you can catch!!

I don't think its a cure, meaning that if you already have HIV then this vaccine won't cure you (not sure tho). I think its that in case you're exposed your immune system will be able to fight the virus so you won't get the disease. The difference with this vaccine is that it uses mRNA technlogy, unlike other "normal" vaccines that inject you with a small dosis of the virus itself, mRNA vaccines teaches your body to create a protein similar to the virus, your immune system then fights this protein, so when you are exposed to the real virus, your immune system knows how to fight it off.

No it won't work quite like that, the idea is to neutralise the HIV virus when it hits the body and eradicate it. Treatment is completely separate.

You can't let's say catch a mild case of HIV because you've had a vaccine. HIV is HIV - that's it, once you've got it you've got it and it behaves the same in every person, uncontrollable multiplication of HIV virus.

Treatment stops the virus from multiplying and suppresses visible virus, only virus left is deep hidden in sleeper cells.

Vaccine would eradicate before the chance of multiplication occurs thus removing from the body entirely.
