About Gaga's Characters...

Before I start this thread, I just want to say that I love Gaga's characters that she's portrayed on the screen both big and small. I loved her as the Countess, Ally, and Patrizia. I thought she did an amazing job and I have absolutely nothing negative to say about any of these roles.

With that being said...

I feel like Gaga is only playing "comfortable" roles. By this I mean that she's always playing someone extremely glamorous and campy. I'm aware this is literally what she's  portrayed her entire career, but I think it's a little too... predictable??

I would really love to see her play a beaten down role where she gets gritty and dirty and gross. For reference, I would love to see her play a character like Nicole Kidman's 'Destroyer'. Or some more recent examples like Halle Berry's 'Bruised' or Sandra Bullock's 'The Unforgivable.'

I think Gaga is an incredible actress with immense range. I just wish she would do something that's a little less... Gaga, if that makes sense?

Thoughts?

I agree, although I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. Many acclaimed and respected actors have played roles that were mostly within their comfort zone. That being said I think Gaga is very much capable of a "gritty" role. I'd like to see her do something like this:

That makes sense! I'd love to see a character that leans away from what we know her as, à la SJP in Family Stone or Jessica Chastain's character in The Help. Either someone who thinks they're in complete control of their actions, emotions, appearance, and energy—or someone who doesn't have that control at all. I think it'd even be therapeutic (for anyone!).

However, she's Gaga to the core—and I'm so glad it seems like she's embracing this, or at least the simultaneous duality and synchronicity between Stef and Gaga. I think it'd be akin to asking an actor like Johnny Depp to not choose characters that are so ... Johnny Depp. Plus thinking of her embodying characters like Sally Bowles or Fran Fine makes me *shriek in ghey.* I'll pass on Cleopatra for obvious social climate reasons.

She's a leading lady, but has the tools to be a character actor. Lightning in a bottle, reference intended. This was only her 2nd movie (lol let's forget that Machete Kills performance), and I'm so pumped to see where her career takes her.

Master, play me your symphony; I will answer to anything. Take me on a trip,

She has only been in 2 movies lmao let the girl breathe. It’s like people in 2010 saying Gaga only knows how to make dance music when she proved everyone wrong a few years later and then some :ohwell:

patrizia is not campy at all, she's literally a real woman completely different to her she had to intensely research to create her character and she did an amazing job, even her accent it's molded after hers, it's not something campy, and the glamour she has is something she portray as try-hard, because she's never as shiny or classy as she's supposed to.
I don't know why people labelled HoG as camp, maybe they don't know what really is camp cinema, HoG has comedy and a bit of dark humor, but it's very far away to be a camp movie the slightest, it's a drama, that's it, labelling camp it's what created a lot of false expectations and left people disapointed wanting something out of it that is never delivered.
And honestly it's annoying how some people are labelling everything as camp lately, it has really lost its meaning and sensibilities.

Idk I don't really see Ally as glamorous or campy, even if it wasn't gritty either.. but I understand what your saying because it still is a little close to herself

I'm sure she could pull off a role like you're describing, but also I'm not sure if I would want her to do one that's too gritty or dark because of how hard it is mentally to play this type of character. Like I don't want her to jeopardize her health with playing a joker type character or something

I never thought of it in terms of Johnny Depp that's actually a really good point. It would be weird to see him outside of his typical camp roles, although it would be quite a shock and I think maybe that's what I'm reaching for with my original post. I think maybe it's just because she's such a powerhouse in everything she does and maybe sometimes for me personally, cause I've been a fan of hers for so long, I think it would be refreshing to see her portray a character that's so different from "Gaga" that it's almost hard to imagine she's playing the role. Idk if that makes sense lol

i have no clue what you’re talking about.

All 3 major roles she played are very different. In fact I feel like with her movie roles she does what she’s done in her music projects for years, she deliberately does a dramatic shift compared to the last project.

I was thinking this too while I was typing the OP. I'm not saying that her NEXT movie has to be dark and gritty but I would like to see her EVENTUALLY go there with her career when she knows she has the mental capacity and strength to pull off such a heavy role. I mean, the examples I talked about were all very established actresses with decades in the industry before they pulled those roles off, and I think that it will take some time for Gaga to get there herself but I think when/if she ever decides to do such a role, she will absolutely kill it.

I agree with you 100%, I don't think it's a bad thing at all. I mean, Gaga has been in a whole 2 movies atp in her career so I'm not expecting or even wanting her to do something really off the beaten path anytime soon, I just think it would be interesting to see how she would pull off such a raw role

I'm not saying that at all and I think you're missing the point. I'm not saying Gaga is putting herself in a box per say. She is an extremely talented woman who can do literally almost anything she sets her mind to. I'm not demanding she releases and raw Oscar bait movie now, but I would love to see her acting progress to a point where she is comfortable and in a solid head space to play such a character if that makes more sense?

When I saw her in ahs Roanoke as Scáthach I thought omfg from countess to this???? And I really liked her portraying this character! And I'd like to see her playing roles like this. And I don't think that both Ally and Patrizia were comfy and glamorous:kiss:
