Genetic variant makes eating sugar healthy

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen say up to three percent of Greenlanders are able to process sugar differently, making a bowl of ice cream as healthy as a plate of broccoli.
They find that the unique diet among the people living in Greenland for millennia, which features hardly any sugar at all, has led to two copies of a gene mutation that helps them absorb sugar differently than all other humans. This makes them less likely to be overweight, have cholesterol problems, or suffer from obesity-related diseases.

In a study of 6,551 adult Greenlanders, the team found that two to three percent of the group have what scientists call a sucrase-isomaltase deficiency.
They do not absorb ordinary sugar in the bloodstream the way people without the genetic variation do. Instead, sugar heads directly into their intestine.

Study authors say the most likely reason for the development of this “sweet” mutation is the traditional diet among Greenlanders which goes back thousands of years.
It is probably due to Greenlanders not having had very much sugar in their diet.

The research team hope that they can use the results of their new study to lay the groundwork for developing new drugs that might one day be used to treat cardiovascular disease and obesity.

I wonder if this could be found in other populations. I would explain why some people can eat whatever and not gain anything. I look at something with sugar and gain weight.

Perhaps if circumstances of evolution were the similar in the two environments but most of that is to do with metabolism (as you no doubt know).

Some populations are genetically disposed to be immune to certain diseases/infections.

Economy

I find the title clickbaity and whoever wrote the article misleading

From my understanding, these people are not harmed in the same way regular ppl are from sugar intake (tho i assume it still impacts their gut flora negatively, perhaps even more so if hardly any sugar is absorbed and goes straight to intestines)

But calling it healthy and comparing icecream and sugar to broccoli? Just because a bowl of icecream doesnt harm u with sugar spikes and calories doesnt mean its "healthy" either.

Most sweets are still poor in nutritional value so dont compare it to a vegetable. At best this makes it more neutral for these ppl and they are harmed LESS.

But between filling u up and taking up space in ur belly from regular nutritious food, and the disastrous impacts it probably has on their gut flora, I think to call it "healthy" is a big stretch :madge:
