I was reading about the Pfizer one yesterday. Apparently it's based on existing antivirals that have been created to treat HIV and Hepatitis C. It blocks certain enzymes in the body and basically prevents a virus from replicating itself. Luckily, with the way it works, it should remain effective against different variants. Unfortunately, supply is extremely limited right now and it's going to take time to ramp up production. It only works if you start taking it within 5 days of getting infected, so there is very little time to realize you have symptoms, get tested, see your doctor, and get the pills. You need timely access to a test in order to know whether you need to take the pill, but you also require access to the pill once you know that you need it.
