TEANUS 16,215
This is awesome! However, I will NEVER be for universal free college. I went to a four year university ranked the cheapest (but one of the best) in my state, so many parents from the cities force their kids to attend that school, whether they want to be there or belong there or not. They’re the ones that cause disruptions in class, don’t care about their grades, get classes in trouble (the old tale of kid ruining it for the class), and yet, we still want universally free college for everyone? Classes would be flooded with those who don’t want to be there and shouldn’t be there because they could be more successful without it. At the end of the day going to college is a choice, and in the 21st century it’s certainly not the only way to be successful anymore. Choosing a more expensive college is a choice, many still choose a more expensive college for clout, partying, etc. aka all the wrong reasons. If two colleges offer your desired course of learning and you still choose the more expensive one just because, that’s on you, not the government. Not to mention scholarships, grants, etc. for those who need them, work for them, and apply for them. I had a single mom with a low income so by my junior year my college was paid for anyway by financial aid. I got a great education at my small school With that being said, I DO support merit-based tuition discounts. By your junior and senior year, you should be able to have free college based on your academic and attendance performance your freshman and sophomore years. Then, if you keep it up your last years OR go to graduate school, your first two years are forgiven. Just an example. Nothing will ever be completely free universally, nor should some of things be, remember that British social ladies with upturned pinkies, glasses clinking // xoxoTEANUS

Not everything needs to be free Why do you have to be rude in your response? It was just a question. Never denounced community colleges. But that brings up a good point, that’s great for your brother, but not everything is about making a ton of money either, you know. Higher education is needed for certain career paths: doctors, chemists, engineers, other robust experimental sciences. Why do those people have to go in debt for careers we need for a society to move forward?

Because they are choosing that profession, no one is forcing them. They don't deserve a free pass. They made the bed, they should lay in it. This is one of the many reasons I no longer associate with liberals, y'all think everything should be FREE. It's sickening. You remind me that it's such a wonderful thing to love. Free university means higher taxes and I'm not paying for a stranger to go to college when they can choose a different career that doesn't require a 4 year degree. AJRocketMan 2,684
Jokes aside, this isn’t gonna do much. We need to get rid of student loans in my opinion. They served a purpose back in the ‘60s but they just made the problem worse. America needs to revert to how we did things before student loans came along. The easy money that student loans represented made universities more fancy, more complicated, and more expensive. Not just that, but they contributed to making higher education a necessity rather than an option. I don’t think free university is possibly any time soon. AsleepOnTheCeiling 7,009
Some of you guys in here are just coming off way too conservative. "You liberals just want everything to be free". Um.... Student loans have become such an issue that teachers Nationwide either have a second job or are leaving teaching. On top of that this choice that binds you for 20 years is made at 18. We have a generation that's not being invested in in the slightest but is being choked financially. No more pension plans. Social Security is set to run out. Education requirements are rising and 18 year olds are roped into average payments of $400/month to be paid from the age of 22 to 42. Baby boomers rigged the system in their favor and then left their grandchildren out to hang, but this generation is greedy and lazy because they see a system so broken they believe the only way to fix it is to eliminate it completely. Right.

Not everything needs to be free While it’s true that it’s not completely necessary, we’re conditioned from a young age to believe that it is and subsequently are never told about alternative options. I know I certainly was. While higher education doesn’t need to be free, the affordability crisis certainly needs to be addressed. The easy money from student loans has bloated the budgets of public state universities, adding a bunch of unnecessary facilities & amenities (Olympic-sized pools? Fancy arenas/football stadiums? Lavish sports programs for athletes that shower them in luxury and privilege? The outrageous number of faculty? Give me a break) while ultimately harming those who desire a career path but need a college education to achieve that. Add to that decreased federal funding for state schools compared to the past and you have a situation that the U.S. is in right now. Over the long-term, something needs to be done to fix this. Outlawing federal student loans, increasing federal funding to public universities, and making community college and trade schools free will go a long way towards solving this crisis. Additionally, some form of student loan forgiveness is going to be necessary for the Millennial generation if we want to stabilize our economy and society. Homeownership is proven to make society more stable, and Millennials are in their peak home buying years. A debt-ridden generation is not good to have. If another Depression were to happen, Millennials will be toast forever.

I wish I had played my cards right when I moved into education. If I had moved home first, to a rural district, I could have worked here for 5-ish years and had a couple thousand bucks forgiven. But, nope...I just had to start in an urban district Now, I'm ineligible for any forgiveness. I agree about home buying though, it's going to be a mess soon. MonsterofFame 1,797
Aw how cute of them to give us an extra 4 months... Seriously GTFO. You (Biden) wanted to pass a $6 trillion bill with billions for "clean energy" and helping other countries yet can't carve out a few billion for STUDENTS who needed money to BUILD A LIFE? Biden said: "We shouldn't forgive student loans for people who went to Yale and Harvard." Ok. So then write the bill so wealthy people won't be forgiven FFS. What about the 99% of us that DO NEED IT? At least Trump would've been up-front and said we don't deserve handouts for whatever reason. Biden is doing absolutely nothing and is being a complete con artist about it.
