I dont see wiping out debt for a random selected generation fair or a good idea in the long term For starters it could send future students the message they can rack up debt because theres a chance they wont have to pay it. They may not try as hard to save up for tuition or minimize borrowing. No a good message to send. And even if habits dont change, debt will still just rack up again I think student debt cancellation has to come with other reforms to make education more affordable as well along with it. Doing one and not the other will have its negative side effects long term Education is a good investment, its one of those things government can spend on that actually pays itself back in the long term Tho im also pro a small fee to discourage ppl just "trying it out" and that may not necessairily be serious about it. Its still a resource expensive thing to have people just casually try. However, at the time you chose to go to college AND chose which school to attend, you knew the costs involved and made a conscious decision to take out loans in order to pay for It. But now that those loan payments are due, you want the government to swoop in and “forgive” them for you? It’s utter nonsense. I say that as a person with significant student loan debt. Soooo, everyone deserves a free higher education, but not a free roof over their head? You know how backwards that sounds right? Everyone currently has access to a free education through high school. You then have a choice if you want to pursue furthering your education on your own dime. I think that’s fair (yes costs are WAY out of control), but at the very least we all know going in that this is how the system is currently set up and have the option to choose that route for our lives or not.
