Major sidenote that conveniently has been left out of this post is that people in Africa are far younger and don't have a large population of 70+ who are much more likely to get sick from this. And that it's summer there.

You can't compare that situation to the West where people are far older and that it's midst of winter here.

The headline is a bit misleading, the study attributes the lower hospitalisation rates to the absolute majority of South Africa having tested positive before Omicron emerged (60-70% of the population already had been infected by Covid-19, many of them very recently due to the Delta variant). Though scientists are hesistant to make any judgments, especially for their study being relevant for European countries with high vaccination but low infection rates.

The authors included several caveats and cautioned against jumping to conclusions about Omicron's intrinsic characteristics.

"It is difficult to disentangle the relative contribution of high levels of previous population immunity versus intrinsic lower virulence to the observed lower disease severity," they wrote.

An estimated 60% to 70% of people in South Africa have had a prior COVID-19 infection, Cohen said.

We've been knew and been saying delta was still the worst but that omicron was the most contagious... I swear you only hear what you want to hear

Either you're the delusional one or you just watch extremist news all day  CDC has been reporting since omicron studies were conducted that delta remained more dangerous but this one was more contagious... like?

Every major news outlet from Faux News to ABC were pushing hysteria that omicron was going to be the worse yet. Well, jokes on them. The majority have seen through their lies.

It's your choice to give them what they want, or listen to science rather than them. I choose to listen to science and the CDC, who reported omicron as more contagious but less lethal than delta weeks ago.

Well the CDC has flip-flopped more than a bottom on a p0rn set. So, they're not exactly the most reliable source at this point either.
