That faux disclaimer "Bey's not gonna like this but..." - please. This is what I don't like about both of them: their arrogance. And if we're really talking Michael Jackson, he was huge worldwide and not mainly in the US. Michael's influence transcended gender, religion, race, ethnicity and identity. People of all walks of life around the world were crazy for him. The fact that Jay Z compared one flawlessly executed Coachella performance to Michael Jackson's career...yeah, no.

Literally this. People in remote villages all over the world knew about Michael. Nobody else has his level of impact.

Nah there's no mystery surrounding Beyonce like there was with MJ. She isn't a controversial artist like MJ was either, he was always in the media and being hounded by the paps.

and that's why she is bigger maybe? there is no need to be controversial, messy or mysterious to have cult status! beyoncé is like a living goddess for so many!

and the fact that she achieved that status while being as unproblematic as she can, makes her EVEN BIGGER

Michael had a way of communicating a message that had mass, commercial appeal. He had huge impact, without either a) dumbing down his work or 2) over-complicating it.

Beyonce, in my view, has pigeon-holed herself as some kind of untouchable goddess that now doesn't have mass appeal. You can see that in her sales and charting history. That's not to say her work isn't important or fantastic - it is - and it's not to say, either, that charts are everything - they're not - but Beyonce will never be 'bigger' than Michael because she is no longer the voice of a generation. She has a voice... but she hardly uses it... and when she does, it's in such a pretentious (imo) way that the general population don't listen. That never happened with Michael.

I actually think Gaga is the closest to Michael out of our current main pop artists. She is far from his level but still the closest in my view. She isn't the dancer he was but I can see that she models the way she carries herself partly on him. Her focus on mental health and kindness really reminds me of Michael, and I find it interesting that commercial success (and 'pleasing the public') is still very important to her as a means to have mass impact and to get her voice heard... much like Michael.

Everybody knew who MJ was. Even babushkas at most remoted villages in eastern Europe. But they never heard of Beyoncé.

We are once again in a situation when somebody thinks that US is the whole world.

I'm not having fun tonight.

Yeah right they're both incredible performers but when it comes to being a true artist, MJ is miles away better than Beyoncé.
She just shows up in studio and listen to the songs that people wrote and produced for her. When Britney doesn't write/compose/produce her songs she's trashtalked but when Beyoncé does the same she's still a creative genius/goddess. This is tiring how overrated this woman is.
