LaLuna 12,732
I have to say, as someone who turned 40 this year... this really hits home. I know I'm still technically young but part of me feels like my best years are behind me and that I've accomplished nothing. Being a woman only exacerbates this feeling because society expects me to be married with kids at my age, and it doesn't seem like it's going to happen. I'm basically having a huge midlife crisis. And I'm terrified of what awaits us in the future. With that said, we have to stop being afraid of "getting older" and try to be perfect. We have to live by our own rules, not what society tells us. Guest
I take issue with the way this is being framed. Multiple people are literally shaming someone who almost died by suicide. Calling them out and saying just get over it, you're ageist, you're misogynistic, I'm sorry, that's actually disgusting. SOCIETY is at fault, but many of the comments here and otherwise are literally basically telling her to get it together and that is not how you go about this conversation. You don't tell someone who almost died of suicide that they are to blame for their own almost death. Sorry. NO.

'Cause that's all that matters there and the fact that you're seemingly not taking that decision lightly (don't want to assume anything, some people will say "I want kids" and jump into bed with their first Tinder match ) is a good thing. And 40 is FAR from old. Old isn't a thing anymore imo. My 35 year old uncle graduated college along side people whose ages ranged from early 20s to mid-70s. As long as you're pursuing something that makes you happy, you haven't wasted a second Whimsical bitch

And I definitely don't want to, as you say, jump into bed with my first Tinder match. The problem is, I know that at this point my biological clock is ticking, I think I might actually already be going through premenopause. I don't think I necessarily want kids, especially not in this day and age. I think it might be just FOMO. Like, what if I miss out on the greatest joy one can experience, being a parent? But then I tell myself that my future boyfriend will most likely have kids of his own, so I can always be a stepmom (even though that word makes my skin crawl ). Or just become a crazy cat lady

Society being at fault is the obvious silent statement of the year. No one comments on how the sky is blue every day. I feel like telling individuals to ignore society, is partly how you can help society to change - bc society is literally made of individuals. Just choose your own path, be confident in it (easier said than done), and maybe you could even be someone others wish to emulate

Go back and read it and tell me that's okay. If they didn't intend to subtly or explicitly place blame on her, then they did a very bad job expressing their position. And I get triggered by this because it's SO common for people to blame people for their own suicides / call them selfish, tell them to man up, etc. You must not have read the original post because for real... LastNight 5,943
This is so incredibly sad to read, I hope she's able to get the help she needs and can heal and recover. Our world is so horribly messed up in so many ways. Unfortunately I think instances like this will become even more common over the next few years, for all the reasons listed in this thread: the combination of existential dread based on the climate crisis, economic uncertainty and political insanity, coupled with the pressures of social media...it's all (literally) killing us. For anyone reading with similar worries about growing up and growing older, you have to know that life is worth living. Please don't let it get to a time where you look back and regret, you're here to really make a go of it. Life is meant to be experienced, even all the hard bits: all the grief and sadness and pain, as well as the good and the joy and the beauty - soak every second of it up. You are valuable for much more than your body, your youth, your beauty. In a world that refers to us as 'consumers' and keeps us in cycles of craving and loneliness, we've got to change the story. We have to see ourselves as citizens once again and build real relationships and communities, we have to wholeheartedly reject the values capitalism has inflicted upon us. We're here for more than to just look pretty, to be someone else's object and to shop, despite what social media tells us. Ageing is a privilege, being here in a body is a gift, you matter and we need you. Also, this whole 'gay death' thing at 30 is such bs and you've got to stop buying into it, and even feeding into it with the self deprecating jokes. We really need to banish that concept entirely, it's insulting to ourselves, our elders and all of those who came before us, not to mention those who lost/lose their lives before they even get anywhere near 30. I've had a really transformative year that has seen me reckon with similar fears. Fortunately I never became suicidal, but it's not difficult these days to end up on that slippery slope. If I can recommend anything, taking myself off Twitter and trying to reduce my time on Instagram has been a game-changer. I've also been reading a lot, and a book called The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle genuinely changed my life and continues to do so. It's not religious, it doesn't require you to believe in anything, but it is spiritual in the sense that it focuses on awakening from the madness. I also discovered a new podcast called Pulling the Thread and found this episode particularly resonant, and I'm looking forward to reading the guest's book. It really speaks to a lot of this existential dread and the state of the world right now. It's a fun listen for anyone who's interested!
CatelynnMarie 4,556
There’s a lot I would like to say about this and the topic entirely, but I don’t know how to say it all quick and concisely. What I can say is I relate to it and understand.
