Also, we Americans REALLY need to start getting kids into the trades instead of university. Tertiary education is no guarantee of a truly better life and you ultimately shouldn’t need a degree to be successful. Vocational school may not be glamorous, but it pays well and many schools are cheap enough.

It’s nihilistically hilarious watching neoliberals twist themselves into knots attempting to let Biden off the hook for something he is 100% responsible for

it’s beyond parody at this point

So glad my school district has a skills center offering culinary, A/C repair, auto repair, among other trades. It's available to all juniors and seniors and leads to a full associates degree in those areas in conjunction with a high school diploma. The community college offers similar programs in other trade areas with the same outcome. The change is happening, just slowly.

You remind me that it's such a wonderful thing to love.

That's the thing. Majority of the presidential candidates only say whatever they know will grab them the vote. It's all words, no action.

Thats how government in democracies work. Getting any agenda is a complicated web gqme of compromises, deals, sometimes something completely blocked etc

This happens no exeptions unless a government wins by large majority

Theres no politician that would ever get done even close to all they say on campaign

Even figures like AOC or Bernie Sanders that are so worshipped by progressives would probably have a much lower impact than ppl think

President Biden

I won’t be voting for the Democratic Party again unless it’s an ACTUAL progressive whose word can be trusted. All that talk about student loans and healthcare and criminal justice during the primaries was all bullshit.

They won’t be even do a damn thing about climate change. In fact, the bipartisan bill that recently passed may make emissions WORSE.

They won’t do anything about the filibuster. They won’t do anything about gerrymandering. They won’t do anything about the Supreme Court. They won’t do anything about Saudi Arabia’s humans rights violations in Yemen. They won’t do anything about our dependence on oil. They won’t do anything about the cost of healthcare. The list goes on and on.

Oh but they all rush to pass a bigger defense budget than was asked for. Who are we at war with?

YES! LETS ELECT AN AUTHORITARIAN DICTATOR WHO TRIED TO INVADE THE CAPITOL INSTEAD!! GENIUS! THAT’LL TEACH’EM A LESSON!!

President Biden

:interestinga: Look I hate student debt as much as the first person

But this isn’t really surprising given inflation, debt, and the debate over the cost of the upcoming Build Back Better bill.

At some point something’s got to give ig:yennefer: This wouldn't happen if we had just elected Al Gore & Joe Lieberman. We used to have a government surplus in the 90s!

Please participate in your local elections. :saladga: The biggest change has to happen with the smallest governments. I'm not surprised, and I'm still incredibly grateful Trump didn't get re-elected, but these midterms will be brutal.

Republicans have already overtaken my local school board. It's happening in every corner of America.

When he made the $10,000 student loan forgiveness promise, it was in the form of signing a bill passed by Congress to do that. Congress controls the pursestrings, always has. Congress passes the budget. Congress passes all bills allocating funding for programs. $10,000 each amounts to $370,000,000,000. 370 billion. It's a huge amount of money, and is very doubtful that anyone wants to set a precedent of a President executive ordering $370 billion of costs.

Democrats need 2 more seats in the senate and need to hold majority in house, 10 more senators would be even better. Go get that for the midterms.

Referencing an npr article that also shows what Bidens administration has done to re-evaluate student loan forgiveness on existing programs.

Btw, I have had student loans 2 different times in my life. Every penny has been repaid. Forgiveness, pffft. Get the job you deserve and pay it off with earnings from your work.

This article explains the actual limitations and how those prior cancellations happened:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/prestoncooper2/2021/08/30/no-biden-cant-forgive-student-loans-by-executive-order/?sh=38ac886e3b2b

Read it.

So the debt was cancelled? Good. Promise you no one cares how…

Also, basically he’s only done what congress has allowed? Fair. But literally 0 experts are quoted saying he cant do it. That article is written by one person who called it a “bad policy” and clearly cant see the bigger picture. Yawn. If he does do it, it’ll me challenged in court, but see here’s where the loser mentality comes in: yall think he’d lose. In an era of republicans thinking they’re Gods, and actually getting surprising Ws, Democrats like Biden who are too afraid to go into the unknown, despite having huge moral backing, are all that’s left? Tragic.

So, TL;DR: Nobody knows if he technically can or cant, he has in the past and found an excuses for it, and he’s not willing to start a legal battle for it?

Eh… he should still swing that pen.

“Congress this… Congress that…”

Off topic, but my friend asked me what was the point of a president if literally everything is up to congress… and I truly couldn’t find a good answer. It really feels like just a relic of feudalism, like a America still wanted a highest power to worship at the time. All the press does is treat the presidency as a king, and like… even some politicians act that way. Very strange. A system where congress would be the main focus would be such a better serve for democracy and getting things done.

It's true though. In essence, the office of the President is nothing more than a ceremonial figure head. Everything that he signs has to go through some congressional oversight. Same with the governors.
