What’s messy is that the official WSS twitter is promoting that guy in their recent tweets and people are dragging the movie because of that. They should just remove him from the marketing plan. exactly! i can understand that they can't exactly recast him and reshoot everything he's in, but what makes no sense to me is how prominently he's being featured in the marketing,, wtf
LilyLark 9,899
WSS actually had a ton of marketing...they even had like an ABC special about the show and everything. In the write ups, they've been discussing that aspect that it did get a promotional push.... IDK, I feel like streaming + COVID has kind of killed the theater experience outside of family films and comic book films. Even Dune, which did really well, is going to barely turn a profit due to the budget & marketing. HOG is the exception, not the rule, and it's only a hit by pandemic standards. I say this as someone who saw the film and thought it was good. I feel like no one was really asking for a West Side Story remake. Not to mention, the original...well Latinos in general tend to have very mixed feelings on it. My mom, who is not particularly 'woke', always thought the original was a bit iffy and there are definitely a lot of older Latino/as like my mom that have the same take (I think NY Times even did a write up on it). Literally, one of the original songs by Sondheim is basically "Puerto Rico is full of tropical diseases, takes too much money from the mainland, people have too many babies, and there is too much violence"..so you can see how people kind of side eye it. I sort of feel like West Side Story was a product of its time and should have been viewed as such rather than "let's remake it." And no big stars definitely hurt it, too, even if Spielberg's name was all over.

RichAssPiss 4,697
It's an excellent movie. Sadly movies need social buzz to gain traction it seems and this is a more adult skewing homage to classic Hollywood spectacle films.
HIM820 1,757
I really don’t want to read about box office disappointments for the next year, because people so easily equate it to the quality or content of the movie. We are trained to think more $ means it’s good, when that’s not the case with art at all. The theater experience hasn’t bounced back yet. Casual moviegoers, that push the movie into a profitable margin, haven’t come back. When I saw House of Gucci on a Friday night, opening weekend there was barely anyone there. I actually felt safer there from Covid then going out shopping. Gaga and her publicity power are really driving that movie. People bought new streaming services over the pandemic and started new watching habits that they still feel comfortable doing. That’s not set in stone though, and I see it changing once people are truly comfortable again. It just depends in the movie theaters will be able to float until then. djBuffoon 12,005
Musicals can be a tough sell, but honestly, we're not the production house and the box office numbers shouldn't matter to anyone else but them. I really hope more and more people go see this film. It is a definitive adaptation of one of the greatest musicals ever written, and I expect that it will receive a ton of Oscar nominations. See it on the biggest screen possible.

The scene where he stands in the puddles of water to serenade Maria was absolutely STUNNING. I loved the color and the visuals , but the ending destroyed me the same way ASIB did. Just ****ing once I want my characters to have a future together so I can believe in the world. Do YOU own the 4' by 6' Perfect Illusion promo Poster? Will pay you for it. Let alone it was out and the original one is one of my favourite musicals. Ofc I won't be watching it bc I'm sick of these unnecessary remakes, but it's weird I haven't seen/heard anything of it. 10 hours ago, SevenWonder said: Musicals aren't my thing, so I was never going to see it. But I've heard the same things from my friends who do love musicals: You don't remake something as beloved (at least in the US) as West Side Story. Like the Wizard of Oz or Sound of Music. Just leave those be. In other news, I wonder of Gucci can reach 60 million? Once schools are out for Christmas break, it should, at least, maintain what it's bringing in now. 10 hours ago, TimisaMonster said: If he had set it in more modern times...it may have had more of an appeal, but a straight copy paste remake was not it... ESPECIALLY with BLM, and the political climate of our country and racism reaching new heights...Steven could have revamped it to a true younger and modern audience but I guess nostalgia doesn't work for everything... Spielberg's film is not a remake. It is simply a new adaptation of the Broadway show, it is not a new version of the 1961 film. The 1961 film is not an incredibly faithful adaptation of the original 1957 show. It used the show's story as a framework but ultimately utilized different story beats, highlighted different themes, toned down a great deal of the social commentary of the piece, greatly changed the tone, and made alterations to the story's overall presentation. The film is generally well liked by the theater community, though it is not viewed as a film version of the musical because they are fundamentally different beasts. Spielberg's film is an adaptation of the musical and presents something different than the '61 film. Spielberg's film follows the musical's darker tone, brings back to the forefront the heavier themes of the show, doesn't shy away from the social commentary, and presents the story in a very different way than the '61 film. Spielberg brought to the forefront themes that are relevant today, namely racism, xenophobia, and generational prejudice. While it is set in the 50s, it mirrors the modern world in many ways and that is not accidental. This is not a remake, it is simply a new adaptation. And to that point, it is really the first actual true adaptation of the musical that's ever been put on screen.
Omar Vela 2,499
People hating on musicals is the kind of uncultured hennys I would never want as my friends Also, you guys talking s*** about remakes and musicals but you were not being so hard about that when Gaga starred in a remake of a remake of a remake that was also kind of a musical
Karl 3,173
It's an excellent peice of cinema, it's got massive sets and hundreds of extras like the classic Hollywood musicals which you just don't see anymore. It's got 97% on RT as well so critically acclaimed, I'm surprised it's not done well, speilberg is a massive name, and musicals at Xmas generally do quite well, Les Mis for example. It’s pretty obvious that we will like anything Gaga is in. I have never seen a superhero movie in my life but if she decides to join marvel, I will be the first in line. That’s Gaga’s power Also, just because ASIB has original songs, doesn’t make it a musical.
