Frank Langella, Carla Gugino, Mary McDonnell, Mark Hamill and Carl Lumbly will star on Mike Flanagan’s new Edgar Allen Poe-inspired Netflix series “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Haunting of Hill House” creator revealed Thursday.

“This miniseries is a modern remix of some of the most iconic works of Edgar Allan Poe. To tell this epic tale of greed, horror, and tragedy, we have assembled the largest ensemble cast in the history of Intrepid Pictures,” Flanagan tweeted Thursday.

Per Flanagan, Langella will play Roderick Usher, “the towering patriarch of the Usher dynasty,” McDonnell is set as Madeline Usher, “Roderick’s twin sister and the hidden hand of the Usher dynasty,” Lumbly is taking on “Poe’s legendary investigator C. Auguste Dupin,” and Hamill has been cast as “a character surprisingly at home in the shadows,” while Gugino’s role is undisclosed.

Additional cast for “The Fall of the House of Usher” will be announced Friday.

“The Fall of the House of Usher” was ordered to series last month at Netflix, where Flanagan and his producing partner Trevor Macy have an overall deal and previously produced “The Haunting of Hill House” and followup “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” as well as the limited series “Midnight Mass.”

Flanagan mastermind told TheWrap in November that when you see “The Fall of the House of Usher,” which does not yet have a premiere date, “you’ll see it is not at all of the DNA of the ‘Haunting’ series.”

“It’s very much its own thing tonally, thematically. It’s something we’ve actually never done before,” Flanagan told TheWrap. “And so it felt like we would be limiting it, in an unfortunate way, if we tried to shove it into that ‘Haunting’ shoebox. It very much is its own crazy, over-the-top, insane, beautiful, macabre, just wicked thing that is so different.”

So excited! Mike Flanagan has done great work so far! Shame Bly Manor was so rushed, the writing was terrible. Midnight Mass made up for it all the way and Hill House is iconic anyway.

I personally loved Bly Manor but it had more guest writers and directors than Hill House so I see why it's less acclaimed

So basically it's gonna be about madness and ghosts

But they didn't want to call it "The Haunting of Usher House", so they called it "The Fall of the House of Usher" :huntyga:

I'm really excited about the cast tho

And so happy that Mark Hamill is having tons of contracts, he deserves

I will watch anything with Flanagan's name on it. The results are mostly a hit, but even the lesser works (Bly Manor, Before I Wake, Ouija 2) are very solid pieces of horror cinema.

I really liked the initial setup for Bly Manor but I felt that after the twist episode midseason the story was basically told and they had only boring flashback episodes left that added nothing to the main story.

Try reading the works of Poe, it most certainly would have fit the mold of the haunting of series but poe is much darker in tone than hill house book and the turning of the screw (which bly manor was based on) so I see why they chose to make it a separate thing.

“The fall of the house of usher” is literally the name of the Edgar Allen Poe story :messga:
