Bradley Cooper has revealed that he was held up at knifepoint on the subway in New York City in 2019 on the way to pick up his daughter from school.

He revealed on the Armchair Expert podcast Monday that in October 2019, a stranger pulled a knife on him while he was on the subway in New York City. Cooper recalled wearing noise-canceling headphones, sunglasses and a hat trying to be "incognito" while going to pick up his daughter, who was 2½ years old at the time.

"I used to walk around New York City all the time with [headphones] on — and this was pre-pandemic — and I was on the subway, 11:45, to pick Lea up downtown at Russian school, and I got held up at knifepoint," Cooper said. "I realized I had gotten way, way too comfortable in the city. My guard was down".

The Oscar nominee explained he was at the end of the subway when someone approached him. He thought at first it was someone asking for a selfie, however: "I look down and I see a knife." He estimated that it was maybe a two-and-a-half-inch blade, joking, "I remember thinking 'That's a nice knife.'"
"Now, I had my headphones on the whole time so I can't hear anything. I'm just listening to music. It's scored, the whole thing is scored," Cooper said. "I see the person's eyes. I'm taken by how young they are. And then, I'm sure you were taught this, you don't ever run from knife, you just try to, like, stay there."

Bradley recalled that he "knocked" the attacker's arm up and ran to escape, jumping over the turnstile. When the person also started running away, the actor took photos of him and approached police officers outside the subway station.

Cooper said, "Then I got back in the subway and picked up my daughter. It was crazy."

That's incredible he could think so fast while listening to music and have enough time to take pics of the dude running away

Yikes. I used to live in NYC and while I have definitely encountered my fair share of characters on the subway, I never felt unsafe. Even then, I would read stories about people being attacked by vagrants in the subway. And he was probably in a popular area with lots of people too. I can’t imagine what would’ve happened if he was in subway stations at places such as Crown Heights, BedStuy, or East Flatbush, which were much creepier. No bueno.

I live in Toronto and visited NYC a few years ago. I took the subway to some places and I found them really smelly, dirty, polluted, and a lot of creepy looking people.

New Yorkers I talked to told me not to worry too much as its normal, but that is some extremely low standard when compared to Toronto's subways which are clean, modern and very safe.

Poor Bradley - I really hope he still goes out and lives his live without fear.

It should be common knowledge that you should not have music on at night walking around. You are vulnerable that way and it kind of makes you a target because you are less aware of your surroundings.

I’m glad he was safe.

I know that's not the problem but walking on the street with noise canceling phones is not a good idea

If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

Sorry, I might be reading into it too much, but it seems like you’re victim blaming? To be honest, I am always listening to music with my AirPods Pro at night and nothing has ever happened to me. And I live, you know, in an East-European Capital. Of course, it’s different compared to NYC but to blame him for listening to music, that it is kind of his fault for this attack as he was ‘unaware’ is actually ridiculous. I know literally no one who wouldn’t listen to music at night while walking the streets.

Advocating for street smarts and common sense is victim blaming? :poot:

I’ve lived in NYC for 15 years and this is something anyone visiting or living here should know.

I too was robbed by knifepoint in nyc in 2019! I lived really close to a big subway station, so I’m pretty sure he followed me back to my place. I too noticed how young the person was, as they could have still been in high school. At the end I was a little shook up but felt really horrible someone felt the need to try and scare me to just try and get some money- I noticed he wasn’t actually trying to take anything from me (bag, wallet), he just wanted cash.
