Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 has captured the tightly wound spiral arms swirling around the heart of UGC 11537 at infrared and visible wavelengths, showing both the bright bands of stars and the dark clouds of dust threading throughout the galaxy. This image came from a set of observations designed to help astronomers weigh supermassive black holes in distant galaxies. Basically because space expands the galaxy is actually further away now in light years than the time it took for the light to get here For example our universe is estimated to be 13.7 billion years old yet our radius of observable universe is like 46 Billion light years The light thats hitting us from millions of years ago or more has the object further away by now Now i dunno if when they say 230M light years away they mean the way we observe it now or if they are adjusting the red shift for its true distance If 230 million light years is the actual distance adjusted for space expansion than ud be seeing the galaxy as it looked earlier than 230M years ago. Maybe less than 200M in actuality If they arent adjusting for that and mean 230M light years as presently seen from earth (in that caze in actuality the galaxy would be further away by now) then yes thats the same number of years ur looking back Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

So light to travel 1 billion light years from point A to point B will take a lot longer than that to actually get there because by the time it reaches point B space expanded so much that it will have travelled a much greater distance than that Edit: In fact the furthest galaxies we see in the universe are now moving away at a faster speed than light which means no more light will be seen from them once we are seeing the light they emited from when they reached that threshold (tho they would be so faint before that that they would be invisible essentially before that, but thats when the last photons of light would reach us from those galaxies) Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
