Bonkers

I came out in the late 90's when it was just on the verge of being relatively normalized.  One of the hard parts was knowing that everyone already knew.

When something is obvious, there's a certain humor there.  Some of the jokes may be bullying but for the most part it's just comraderie and having a sense of humor about the fact that sometimes it's easy to tell and in retrospect it's often funny it was ever a secret.  I wasn't angry about people already knowing, or things they had done or said before because I knew where they were coming from and I had found self acceptance, which was something necessary for me to do in my own journey.

I certainly laughed about my secret not being a secret even though it was slightly uncomfortable, I knew people teasing me were coming from a good place.  (in my case they were, I'm sure other people experience something more difficult)

I'm also seeing in this thread that it's somehow painful for straight people to be thought of as gay.  I have a hard time understanding how that isn't homophobia because it seems to imply that there's something wrong with being gay.  If people have a hard time with the suggestion, then maybe they could use to feel bad so they can work out their feelings about sexuality and how they act and seem.  Sometimes feeling bad is part of learning to love yourself.

If or when Shawn comes out it will be funny in a way, he'll laugh and everybody will love and accept him just the same.

Calm down, dude. This is Shawn Mendes we’re talking about here, not Matthew Shepard

Lol! If you had read my comment a bit more carefully, you would have understood I was talking about online bullying.

As blunt as it sounds I kind of agree.

If someone thinking you’re gay is the worst thing that’s happened in your life then you haven’t had it too bad.

Also to get upset about someone thinking you’re gay kind of suggests that you think being gay is bad, otherwise why would you get upset about it?

It’s not that people think he’s gay, it’s that they presume he is and make fun of him for not coming out about something that might not even be true :triggered:

You really don’t get it. This is comparable to purposefully misgendering someone. Imagine if you’re a biological male who identifies as a male, yet you have people who insist you’re female. Don’t you think that would f*** you up mentally? You don’t get to tell someone else what they are. You’re certainly entitled to think whatever you like, but expressing those thoughts is incredibly insensitive.

Also, no one, not even Shawn, said that he was scared of being called gay. He said it messed with his mental health. For you to not care about that is so beyond gross. There’s a special place in hell for people like you.

I will never understand this take. How is it that people can understand how painful it is for people to be purposefully misgendered, especially trans people, but not this?

What I don't like is how everyone is assuming he's gay based on... what? Mannerisms? That's actually hurtful for gays if anything, no idea why everyone is perpetuating this.

purposeful misgendering is when you know what someone's gender identity is and you deny it.  That's an intentional thing to make someone feel bad.  Non binary people i know don't mind when someone unknowing calls them he or she because they understand why it's happening.

Like I said in my post (and you cut this part out) sometimes, it is bullying.  But sometimes it's not.  Sometimes it's just funny because in reality you can often tell when someone is gay based on how they act and again, there is nothing wrong with being gay.  So if a straight guy is often confused as gay, and he really is straight, it's just something he needs to learn to deal with and accept because it's part of who he is.  You don't see gay guys who seem 100% straight crying when someone calls them straight or tells them they're straight because we live in a world that idealizes hetereosexuality and hates gay people to the extent being assumed gay is somehow painful.

And by the way, I'm not going to engage in this conversation anymore.  So you can say what you want but I won't be answering.

Not me listening to NMR by Billie rn.

We make assumptions about people based on their size

We decide who they are

We decide what they’re worth

Is my value based only on your perception?

Or is your opinion of me not my responsibility?
