Yeah what I'm realizing is that someone with an accent could say an Italian name slightly differently if they are speaking with the accent.

I still think she said the names more like an American but I can agree with you, it doesn't take away from the overall accent and in fact maybe Patrizia would have said them that way.

When I was living in Spain, we would speak a mix between English and Spanish (first I only spoke english since I didn't know a word of spanish when I got there) but after some time I learned spanish and when I spoke english with my russian, british, american, bulgarian, german etc. friends (we had sooo many nationalities there) when we would speak english we would pronounce some words or names spanish (but not all the time) and sometimes it would be the other way around. We would speak english but also pronounce the spanish names like "Pablo" english. It would be "Pabloooough" instead of "Pablo" (short)

Or when we would talk about having to do an essay for a subject like philosophy - we'd say "Have you finished the essay for FilosofĂa?" Or "AngĂŠlica (spanish prounced name that belonged to a russian girl and that was pronounced different in russian than in spanish :selena:) didn't let me copy her homework" lol

It was very messy. :ladyhaha:

The A sound though? Shouldn't it be Ah-ldo? Not Al as in Al Pacino? And I also said that the first "O" in Paolo should have more distinction, she kind of said "Powlo" which sounds Americanized to me.

CC: @RBNLM, please let me know your thoughts too!

I will do anything to prove @Mother of Puppies wrong. :bradley:

In italian we have a clear distinction in the pronunciation of each letter. So the problem as an American for gaga is to take that into account while trying to emulate the accent.

the A sound is ok while the LD is quite off since it should be more incisive.

In Paolo the O are completly americanized. the sound of each is not incisive enough.

And same goes with everything about the sentences, we don't "eat" letters and words , because in italian we pronounce as we read. P is P, A is A, O is O and go on. We have pairs of letters which are pronounced in a different way where we have a distinct sound like GN [ɲ] for example, but are only few exceptions.

but she said "Ahhhl-Do" she didn't say it like "Al Pacino" :wtfga:

Paolo - yeah there is a slight turn to "Powlo" because she said it fast. (But this is very nitpicky!) :partysick:

This makes the fandom seem so desperate :saladga:

I think it makes these so called journalists seem unprofessional since they clearly never even bothered to check a 20 sec. clip of Patrizia speaking before slandering Gaga's efforts.

She never sounded Russian to me, but I am not a native English speaker.

On the other hand, being myself an Italian, I don’t get what an “Italian accent” should sound like, since in Italy we have +20 region and even more accents (we can understand which region, sometimes even which town you are from just hearing you speak)

namely, Patrizia accent is clearly a northern one, but not necessarily Milanese.

milanese accent should be more like Stefano Gabbana… I can notice the difference even when they speak English, probably a native English speaker can’t

when I watched “angels and demons” for the first time I laughed all the time because the Israeli actress, that was supposed to play a native Italian, did not sound Italian at all (not to mention when she actually speaks in Italian), but it seems none English speaker was bothered by it.

the accent is good enough for me: it’s more an “idea” of an Italian accent trying to add some “flavor” more that being geographically accurate (which would be very hard, even for an Italian actor)

And, knowing Russians that speak Italian Gaga doesn’t sound anything like them… but again, I am not English.

Let’s just say Gaga did not need to sound like your average Italian speaker. She just need to sound like Patrizia :partysick:

Low-key this, I mean why are we still dwelling on this? Gaga herself said she didn't want her accent to be sensationalized, so what are we doing here exactly?

Let the film come out and speak for itself.

That's not how Oscar campaigns work unfortunately. There's a smear campaign going on already and it's only November. Go share that video, I know what I'm talking about!

Once again, I'm disappointed in this fanbase and our inability to support our fave. 70% of this site is just jokes about her supposed "failures". Most of this accent bullsh*t started on GGD.
