China opens first clinic for transgender children

According to a report from The Global Times, the multidisciplinary clinic is based at the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai.

The facility is set to be filled with an array of departments including psychology, endocrine and genetic metabolic, and urology departments.

The state-backed publication also described the facility as a “bridge between transgender children, parents, doctors and various circles of society.”

The director of the Beijing LGBT Center, Xin Ying, told the Sixth Tone publication that the facility is a “good sign.”

“It’s essential to have transgender clinics targeted toward children and teenagers because many transgender people develop gender awareness in childhood,” Xin continued.

The inclusion of the gender clinic comes months after the government introduced numerous crackdowns involving the LGBTQ+ community.

Back in September, the government banned effeminate men from appearing on TV and ordered broadcasters to promote “revolutionary culture”.

On the messaging app QQ, keywords like “LGBTQ”, “gay” and “lesbian” have also been banned due to being classified as “harmful.”

In terms of the origins behind the clinic, the hospital revealed that it was created due to a recent case involving a transgender teenager.

At the start of their puberty journey, the anonymous teen began to experience anxiety and depression over their gender identity. Their mental health continued to plummet after they received pushback from their parents.

The family then went to the hospital to get further insight on the topic and to treat the teen’s “increased psychological pressure.”

After going through an evaluation, the doctors confirmed that the teen’s trans identity was valid. They were then put on medication to help stop their menstruation, which in turn stabilised their mood and anxiety.

It is suspicious since the CCP would actively silence you on Weibo (Chinese censored twitter) if you for instance publicly come out as gay/lesbian. The CCP banned LGBTQ+ content on TV, there was a very popular gay series from Taiwan, with two Chinese male actors that were banned from ever being seen in public together irl, and the series itself was canned eventho it was made in Taiwan. Shortly after the CCP banned LGBTQ+ content.

No it's not exactly condoned by the state to be LGBTQ, and this "clinic" seems very sus, especially since there are gay conversion clinics in china, and all institutes and companies are semi-state/state owned.

However I also only know tiny bit about Chinese LGBTQ culture and their struggles, so my summary may not entirely be correct and/or generalizing information.

This sounds extremely suspicious and too good to be true. After all the horrendous things China has been doing not only to silence and erase LGBTQ+ individuals from media, but also the sterilization/rape/genocide of Uighur Muslims living there - I would not be surprised if this was another trap to begin torturing innocent LGBTQ+ individuals or force them into 'conversion' camps.

The Chinese government seems intolerant of anyone that isn't Chinese and heterosexual, I have no reason to believe that they'd embrace anyone else all of a sudden - especially the transgender community. I hope I'm wrong, though.

China has a population in the 10 digits... Their National Government controlling as they may be cannot be behind every decision and project, they certainly have to deligate a lot of decision making as its not possible to micromanage a Nation that huge...

 

They too have Provinces, Departments, Ministers for different sectors etc

 

Not sure why everyones argument against this is that the Government is homophobic so this has to be a trap (to be fair it could be)

 

But if its legit im pretty sure it wasnt the National Governments doing at least not directly. Opening up individual clinics even if they are Unique ones is beneath the tasks of a huge Federal Government. Im sure it was other government institutions at lower levels and individuals who did this certainly not President Xi or his Government at the top

 

Imagine the US doing something simmilar under Trump. Just cuz Trump never would doesnt mean there arent other jurisdictions who would. I know the dynamics arent exactly on the same level between both Countries but still same idea
