Vikings settled in America in 1021 AD, according to tree rings analysis

Half a millennium before Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic, the Vikings reached the “New World”.

While it is known that the Norse landed in Canada, exactly when they set up camp to become the first Europeans to cross the Atlantic, marking the moment when the globe was first known to have been encircled by humans, has remained imprecise.

Now scientists using a new type of dating technique and taking a long-ago solar storm as their reference point have established that the settlement was occupied in AD1021 – all by examining tree rings

It has been thought that the settlement, L’Anse aux Meadows, was thriving somewhere between 990 and 1050. This was based on stylistic analysis of architectural remains and a handful of artefacts

examined after the settlement was discovered 60 years ago.

The dates also tally with interpretations of the Icelandic sagas, which were written down in the 1200s

This study made use of the cosmic-ray induced upsurge in atmospheric radiocarbon concentrations during a known solar storm in AD993.

And they left pretty quickly too. I wonder how America would've looked like if the Vikings were the one who settled long-term instead of Columbus's men. They certainly were collaborative in the places they settled in. Sure they were also know for pillaging but war was the way of the world back then in every continent...except for Antarctica unless the pinguins fought each other

Isn't it generally accepted that a sizeable Viking population integrated with native communities?

I don't know much about the Viking colonisation of North America, but I believe is assumed that they left without mixing with the locals.

They were but I don't know what happened, I know that they left for some reason. I read about this some time ago again. Either way I am happy that my ancestors weren't some bloodthirsty colonizers. All they wanted to do was to create new settlements for their people but they would always let the natives of any country do their own thing unless they started war against the Vikings. They were equally good as diplomats.

Seems like lowkey Vikings were the first mini colonial power. The Portuguese, Spanish, French and English are shaking in their boots as the new evidence is uncovered.

Could this be really true or is this political motivated ? 😊  Most important for Americas success is not who settled there first. Important ist that America works for real authentic peace and cultural respect in the world and don' use their power to restrict other cultures and world areas which they don't understand. Now it sounds political motivated to create a historical line - but of course it could be real and important for future. All depends on the behaviour of the US government. America could really have one day strong viking spirit. I mean, to have love in the soul its important to have peace and truth and soul. Its not just about theories and ideas in head. More about to be a human - a soulful country.

Is Sweden funding studies to show that they were in America before the other Western powers, or what narrative is exactly pushed by politics in these news?
