FfFfFfFF 58,857 Posted October 20, 2021 Share Posted October 20, 2021 A sword believed to have belonged to a crusader who sailed to the Holy Land almost a millennium ago has been recovered from the Mediterranean seabed thanks to an eagle-eyed amateur diver, the Israel Antiquities Authority has said. Though encrusted with marine organisms, the metre-long blade, hilt and handle were distinctive enough to notice after undercurrents apparently shifted sands that had concealed it. Katzin reported his find to the Israel Antiquities Authority, which examined the object and believes it to be around 900 years old. "The iron sword has been preserved in perfect condition and is a beautiful and rare find," Nir Distelfeld, inspector for the IAA's Robbery Prevention Unit, said in a Facebook post on Monday. "It evidently belonged to a Crusader knight." He probably hooked up with some local woman (military raids are known to have had some genetic impact on local populations, very likely is the case with the Crusaders too).
