Streamer says 142 million households sampled Korean drama in first four weeks

Netflix topped forecasts for subscriber growth in the third quarter of 2021, buoyed in part by strong interest in global smash-hit series “Squid Game.”

The streamer overall gained 4.38 million paid subscribers in the period, to reach 213.6 million worldwide. Netflix previously projected global net adds of 3.5 million paid subscribers for Q3, a target most analysts expected the company to beat. Half of the quarter’s subscription gains came from Asia-Pacific markets; Netflix added just 70,000 in the U.S. and Canada.

Netflix reported revenue of $7.48 billion (up 16%) and earnings per diluted share of $3.19 (up 83%) for the period. Wall Street analysts on average expected $7.48 billion in revenue and EPS of $2.56, according to Refinitiv data. Shares of Netflix were down 1.4% in after-hours trading.

It's weird that this show is so popular, it's the kind of thing that only sophisticated viewers appreciate for real as it ain't GP friendly at all

And the show is not even good :selena: this is a power of a viral but I hope they won’t release new shows with purposefully viral-esque scenes to recreate Squid Game hype

I didn't think the show was all that tbh, but good to see a non-english show get so much global hype

Well at least it’s not another white filled cast show getting global acclaim. I think Hollywood media has been the forefront of media and entertainment for years. It’s nice to have Asian media make such a global breakthrough in entertainment.

It sounds like it, but nope: the GP usually goes for stuff like Bridgerton, not a relentless South Korean drama devoid of all emonional sh*t in which the greatest hero is gonna be the unemployed 40 year old dad (I love this "trope" in Asian cinema, something very similar happened in movies such as The Host)

yeah no, this show is as mainstream as it gets, even if its from south korea. It have all the elements to make it very gp friendly. Look all the meme material.

And what does "sophisticated viewers" even mean?:ladyhaha: Usually that demographic goes for other snobby streaming platforms rather than netflix.

whateva is not that deep glad that you enjoyed the show, i did too.

Even if it is "maistream" for a South Korean show it's definetly not the most manstream thing out there by any means... people don't like stories where things go wrong or the bad guys win (not to mention where the characters are despicable by society's standards), if you like this kind of story then you definetly haven't got standard tastes :ohwell:, which is the reason why its popularity is rather odd given the GP's proclivity towards crowd-pleasing stuff

Netflix introducing non Hollywood shows like this and Money Heist among others to the (especially) US audience is such a n admirable and great feat to me.

Money Heist's gotta be the only Spanish show that has represented gay characters with dignity, I swear
