Michael Myers GIF by Halloween

Evil dies tonight!
Just like the franchise?

'Halloween Kills' is the sequel to 2018's 'Halloween' and it's the second part of a trilogy. Unfortunately you can feel this in everything. The film brings little new to the concept of its predecessor(s) and clearly has to keep the story open for the last part. That final chapter will be called 'Halloween Ends' and is set for release in 2022. The upcoming installment could be the reason why director David Gordon Green didn't got the freedom to make bolder choices in this one. Weak storylines and loose ends are the result.

The plot goes in all directions, while actually the same situation occurs repeatedly. The acting is questionable. Yes, even Jamie Lee Curtis let me raised my eyebrows now and then. Although part of the bad acting can certainly be blamed on the poorly written dialogues. But hey; if you're looking for a strong plot and Oscar worthy acting you often won't go to see a Slasher.

It's mainly due to the fast pacing and editting that 'Halloween Kills' got an overall chaotic vibe. But that's not necessarily a bad thing tho, there were moments the chaotic vibe seemed in place with the events of its story.

What did bother, a lot, where the stupid choices some of the characters made.. I mean sure stupid choices are part of a classic horror, but that level of stupidy? Nah. As a viewer it's difficult to empathize with characters who make you go like"do you want to die?".

A movie gets exciting (or tragic) when the viewer can relate to the characters in it's story. 'Halloween Kills' does not even tried to do this and made it's characters flat, with actions nothing more than straight-up death wishes.

It's pretty hard to empathize with this new characters anyway because we hardly get to know them. After their relatively little time on the screen, Michael comes to do his thing. As viewer you won't get the chance to connect with them. That's a shame. After some brutal Michael moments I thought: 'should I care that he/she is dead now?'. The impact of the kills was simply not always there.

Yet 'Halloween Kills' manages to connect within the story as a whole. The flashbacks to the original and 2018 versions where some highlights of the movie. Does this part add anything new to the universe of Michael Myers? Not really. Although I have to admit the visuals and gore got an upgrade that I really liked! There seemed to be a bit more visible of Michael's violence and I even thought a kill or two were pretty creative.

By keeping the 80's style, by still using the nostalgic rock solid score and by staying true to the iconic Michael Myers, this film gets the benefit of the doubt. The nods and references to the original storyline makes 'Halloween Kills' (at least if you know the franchise) good for an okay night out. But like I said; don't expect too much, it's medicore at most.

To me it's clear the franchise is nearing it's end. We know the tricks and there's no or little creativity left. And eventhough this one is at some points still entertaining to watch, I hope evil dies in 2022 and that it'll happen without the entire cast mentioning the whole god damn movie they're gonna do it.

P.S. the end sucks, it really does.

It's an honor.

The ending was REALLY disappointing. I felt the daughter was marked for death since pretty much the beginning of the film and there were so many opportunities for her to go out in a better way than she did

@Alice 911 how much have you read about the next film?

No I don't think there is much out there other than the below. Read if u want to, don't if u don't. its not a major spoiler at all and will be revealed in the trailer

Spoiler

The Halloween Kills/Ends were filmed back to back and were supposed to all be set on the same night. The ending of Kills was changed because they decided during COVID that they wanted Ends to actually be set 3 (or 4?) years later than Kills. This is why the ending feels so messy I think. I don't think they reshot the ending for Kills, just changed the edit. Ends will be reshot

This get me worried and hyped at the same time. Thanks for sharing

I am beyond curious what they have planned for Michael's last scène. I think the way he 'died' in Halloween (2018) was the perfect way to destroy him and that it had the potential to be a worthy end to the Myers' story and to the franchise as a whole. But now that Michael survided that fire from one + the events at the end of two, the writters got for part three a difficult job to do. How are they gonna top that end from 'Halloween' and make good for the end 'Halloween Kills'? How will they do justice to the franchise while they satisfy their fans?

I just hope they've got the balls to create an ending for the universe and they throw us some crazy twist(s). I'm certainly not here for another lacklusting open-end. I want them to be brave enough to give us the forever ending of Michael Myers (at least for the next couple of geneartions).

My speculation is that

Spoiler

Alysson is going to bait Michael into his sister's room, then Laurie will sacrifice herself to kill him (probably by cutting his head off or similar).

They've alluded a lot to:

  • the importance of the sister's bedroom
  • Michael not being able to be killed by 'wound' injuries
  • Laurie being willing to die to stop Michael
  • A weird connection between Michael and Allyson that makes him not interested in killing her

I personally would rather Laurie survive but I don't think it'll pan out that way

Btw I have a question

Spoiler

Did the story explain why Michael is basically immortal?Cuz that’s really strange for me.

It's basically vaugly explained, but not within the timeline of this modern story. They never talked about this in the movies this one is a sequel to. So I don't think so, not in this universe.

The director of the original Halloween once stated in an interview he believed in the power of imagination. That's why you see no use of blood in that one. He gave us space to made our own picture of how gore and bloody the killings must have looked and he believed he could let the minds of his audience create the most horrible and scary pictures by appealing their imagination.

I think for answers about Michael's strenght and power the franchise will also do an appeal on our imagination. For one Michael wears bulletbroof things and lacks a pain threshold. For the other he indeed is immortal. Who knows?

Tho, the credibility of Myer's power drops with each new installment. Therefore the story needs either a rock-solid explanation + powerfull plot OR it has to come to the epic + forever and everlasting elimination of it's iconic villain. I hope they choose the latter and have the guts to call Myers a day.

May he rest in..

Hell.

Agreed on pretty much all points. It’s beautifully filmed, the violence is brutal, a few of the performances are good, but my god, the screenplay is ridiculously dumb at almost every turn.

I know right. Let's pray they step up their game with the last one.
