Netflix benched 3 of its own employees -- including one who's trans -- for blasting Dave Chappelle's new stand-up special ... but the network insists it's more over HOW they did it.

The streaming giant reportedly suspended Terra Field -- who identifies as queer/trans, and who uses she/her pronouns -- and two other Netflix workers for crashing a meeting among top execs last week ... which Field and the rest infiltrated, uninvited -- this, per Variety.

It was a virtual quarterly business review sesh ... and, apparently, CEO Ted Sarandos at one point posed a question to the other bigwigs on how Netflix should handle employees/talent who are upset over Chappelle's special, "The Closer," which is full of trans and LGBTQ jokes.

Sounds like Field and co. piped up right then and there ... but no word on what exactly was said. In any case, they're not gonna be reporting to work for an undetermined amount of time over the stunt.

Ofc a huge capitalist company wants to define and limit activism and blame injustice towards employees on that :huntyga: Totally brand new and never-seen-before techniques :huntyga: Disgusting.

Bonkers

Netflix is responsible for the content they put out, and comedy based on ignorance should be dealt with, but that doesn't give employees a pass to "crash" or "infiltrate" meetings they are not a part of.  You can't do that at companies even if you have a good reason.

Has anyone watched the special? Are the jokes that offensive? Not trying to be shady, I'm just curious, but I don't feel like watching it, Dave Chapelle is not exactly my favorite comedian

They went to a meeting they weren't allowed at. Obviously that's not okay and a violation of policy.  Overall the statements by the co-CEO show that any pro-LGBT stance they've taken is just performative activism. "Obviously we're not gonna take the special down because Chappelle is super successful and we paid for it. It's okay that transphobia is being perpetuated because it's for 'entertainment' and we're making money"

Is that an exact quote?

It's okay that transphobia is being perpetuated because it's for 'entertainment' and we're making money.

"Chappelle is one of the most popular stand-up comedians today, and we have a long standing deal with him. His last special, Sticks & Stones, also controversial, is our most watched, stickiest, and most award winning stand-up special to date. As with our other talent, we work hard to support their creative freedom - even though this means there will always be content on Netflix some people believe is harmful, like Cuties, 365 Days, 13 Reasons Why, or My Unorthodox Life.

Several of you have also asked where we draw the line on hate. We don’t allow titles on Netflix that are designed to incite hate or violence, and we don’t believe The Closer crosses that line. I recognize, however, that distinguishing between commentary and harm is hard, especially with stand-up comedy which exists to push boundaries. Some people find the art of stand-up to be mean-spirited but our members enjoy it, and it’s an important part of our content offering.

In terms of our commitment to inclusion, we’re working hard to ensure more people see their lives reflected on screen and that under-represented communities are not defined by the single story. So we’re proud of titles like Sex Education, Young Royals, Control Z and Disclosure. Externally, particularly in stand-up comedy, artistic freedom is obviously a very different standard of speech than we allow internally as the goals are different: entertaining people versus maintaining a respectful, productive workplace."

This is an excerpt of the quote, the entire article is here

Of course the "big boys and girls" at the top of the hierarchy don't like being challenged by those beneath them.

Pigs.

In my messy era.

Unpopular opinion: I don’t need the entire world to agree with my views, beliefs and opinions.

I am not a fan, but I don’t think what he said is particularly awful, but to many it could seem outdated. People just need thicker skin.

I'm sure if they're quality employees, they will not have any issue finding a job somewhere else, right?

Too many people here with moral superiority complex.
