StrawberryBlond 15,555
I just found an article here that was only posted a short while ago saying that the outage was likely caused by an internal error, or more specifically, "a globalized BGP configuration issue," not a malicious attack and it's currently being fixed although we don't know how long that will take. FB's director of communications said service will resume as soon as possible. A cybersecurity specialist also said there's a small chance it could be a cyber attack but seems far more likely to be DNS/configuration related and that's all: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-10058203/Verizon-T-Mobile-T-leaving-thousands-without-mobile-internet-phone-services.html I'm hoping and praying this is the case as that means all these people's info is safe and site functions will all resume eventually. StrawberryBlond 15,555
@Tinnitus15 Are you sure the source you posted was credible? I've never heard of it and it's not a newspaper. What's coming in now from actual news sites about it being a technical issue seems far more believable. I'd be far more likely to trust what the big names in media are saying as opposed to these small enterprises. I just saw something get announced on the news about it being down as well. Maybe this source posted inaccurate information and everyone just ran with it? 9 minutes ago, Pikachu said: They could also just be saying this to calm people down. But let’s hope that’s true. I wondered that too but then FB won't want to get sued if it turns out the worst happened and they intentionally lied to us. I think we fell into the trap of believing the first thing we see online without stopping to consider the validity of the source. Trust what the big name news outlets are saying, not the smaller names.
Cruelty 6,173
Yeah the NYT is quoting Facebook internal memos that say it's highly unlikely to be a cyberattack. This thread explains that it's basically a case of Facebook locking their car keys inside the car:
