why you keep promoting CRJ like there's no tomorrow?

i would say Gaga and Charli but mostly Gaga.

I'm more confused by the fact that I opened this thread expecting it to be an actual article with scientific proof of something. :bear:

My first thought is Madonna. She was once a huge icon for young women when she started out but by around the early 00's, she just lost her appeal for them (though I don't quite know why) and started to be seen as a gay icon and naturally, gay men started to become her main demographic. I've heard that it's rare to see women at her concerts. The same is also true for Cher and Kylie, I think those three are the ones who are understood to have almost completely gay male audiences these days. I can't think of any full-time fan of these women which is strange because women were their demographic once. I guess that's why so many female singers want to be gay icons - it can cause you to gain more fans as you get legendary as you age. Madonna has a lot of young gay fans who weren't even born until around 2000 or so, so they won't remember the bulk of her work but through their understanding of her as a gay icon, they interested to listen to her old work to see what led her to this status and they became fans. Straight women, on the other hand, don't have this, so when a singer that they looked up to as little girls gets old or they grow up and move on, she's gone for them. And if she was famous before they were born, they'll likely never get interested in her. I think it's pretty sad really how we do this with music and don't see it all as worthy to listen to regardless.

I think Gaga shows have always had a big mix, she's not as gay-focused as one might think. And I remember when I saw Pink that I was surprised how her massive audience was about 98% female, I didn't really think that happened anymore, I don't even think her music is overly female-specific. But every female popstar will have a sizeable gay demographic now. I think in the 80's and 90's, they just kept their music listening habits quiet as they didn't want to be teased but it's more acceptable now to be proud of being a gay male fan of a popstar.

I always thought her music would appeal almost exclusively to women actually. For most straight people, when they hear music like hers, they automatically class it as music for women because she's female and singing pop music about men. I think how things are labelled in different communities due to different expectations is quite fascinating.
