Like, imagine a person going through to get a coffee and is informed the person in front of them paid, Wow, how sweet! But then the customers behind them are a family of four getting full meals, they either have to break the chain and maybe feel bad (or be shamed by the employees sometimes), or pay way more than they had planned, and that can suck for anyone on a budget. It can be nice if one person just pays for another and it ends there, but the chains are basically useless and annoying for most in my view haha I know it's not a.big deal but the Starbucks nerd is cumming out so I'm chiming in. Gaga didn't create a chain, she likely bought a couple hundred dollars in gift cards (I believe the maximum you can put on a card $500) and then left the card(s) with this thief barista at the register for him to just use on every transaction until the funds depleted. It wouldn't involve creating a chain! I agree with you though, those are valid points for why the pay it forward chains aren't the best. 😂 As I mentioned in my other comment I'd def be the person to end the chain and not feel bad about it if I was about to have to pay for a family of

Gift card fraud can be traced especially if you are using an employee discount. It seems ridiculous for an employee to steal a gift card. Maybe he stole it bc he wanted to keep it as a "souvenir" of coming in contact with Gaga lol. Fun fact though, I did steal a gift card from Starbucks when I worked there because it was the one with Gaga/Joanne on it 😂😂 it didn't have funds on it, I just took it and we had 1 less to sell

I get what Gaga was doing, and it's def MUCH better! (I also think this barista is just joking/doesn't even work there/it's all fake, unless he means he took the cards after they'd been used to keep as a souvenir, then that's reasonable lol)

And yeah he realistically could've kept the gift cards after using them and that wouldn't have been bad, they throw them away anyway once empty. Also if he really did steal a celebrity's money and put it on social media, Starbucks is going to catch wind of that and fire his ass

My friend used to work at a local coffee chain's drive thru and told me that everyone there hated dealing with it. Plus some people would get screwed over if their order was only like $3 but the person behind them was considerably more. But again, Gaga's method seems far superior so kudos to her. I always thought of “pay it forward” as returning the favor to someone else when you *can* lol not immediately after someone does it for you? Last time I bought the woman behind me’s groceries & just said pay it forward when she can. Came out to like over $50 but it was during lockdown when people were struggling & I thankfully wasn’t. The entire pay it forward thing kind of becomes pointless if everyone’s just paying for the person behind them? I’ve always been taught that it’s an act of kindness meant to be repaid when you’re in the position to do so.

Like it was likely hundreds of dollars, not like 5 minutes later they're like, "oh, what happened to that? Huh, oh well!"
