Lorde on her cancelled VMA performance

Can you imagine being Lorde's label, seeing the sales so far for Solar Power, and then just letting Lorde cancel performing at the VMAs because it would be what she dreamed:awkney:

I feel like there has to be way more to this story than simple COVID limitations - look at what Gaga pulled off last year when everything was 10x more serious and restrictive. My guess is her label pulled funding for promo as it's a loss at this point and they're sending her back to the studio to start working on a follow up :oprah:

I highly doubt it. I don't even think her label expects outstanding profit from her. I mean, she literally just released an EP in Maori and is giving proceeds to NGOs + all proceeds from her merch for the next 2 days is going to NGOs too. She's never been a hugely profitable artist so expecting big sales from her is not logical. From what I've seen, she has a lot of control over what she produces and releases (otherwise SP wouldn't have seen the light of day at all).

Soft, soothing, and succulent

Fair points - but I highly doubt she would be funding her VMA performance on her own. Stuff like that is usually 100% the label footing the bill.

I could easily see the low sales being the reason why her label would pull funding for a big awards show performance, especially after a string of late night tv show spots that didn't add up to much.

Based solely on sales,  there are VMA performers this year that are way below Lorde...

Yeah... I'm talking about pulling budget for a very large performance.

Which is what she described in her post :partysick:

I love her so much. She's really come into her own as an artist and refuses to compromise on her vision.

Also, she's made it explicitly clear she isn't making music for the charts or money anymore, so anyone saying the label pulled her performance or whatever nonsense is completely misguided.

Are SP sales that bad? How are SP sales compared to Melodrama? Because despite the impact the album had, I don’t think it sold that much either

Melodrama 109K in 1st week (debuted at #1 on Billboard and fell to #13 in the 2nd week)
Solar Power 56K in 1st week  (debuted at #5 on Billboard and fell to #40 in the 2nd week)
(Billboard didn't count Solar Power Music Box +  Melodrama was released in time when Billboard counted merch with digital albums to sales)

isn’t it nice that an artist has some integrity for their work instead of doing something just for money for once?

At the end of the day, the label cares about the money - it’s the only way they can grow/expand. Unfortunately, artistic integrity doesn’t pay the bills.

The label doesn’t control promo, she does lmaoooo if anything, doing this will maybe hurt her funding in the future for making another album? But if we’re being honest here, the label wasn’t hearing this album and expecting a smash commercial hit. They also know that that isn’t Lorde as an artist. She’s not a heavy hitter in the same way that Ari or Megan are, but more like within the lane of singer songwriter-y type stuff. They manage expectations more complexly than just #1 or not so I’m sure she’s fine :)

Mhmm it’s like if we remember interscope talking about Gaga a few years back. They understand her spot in the market now as not the huge ms thing heavy hitter but more of a solid legacy act who can still have pull. They think of Lorde, similarly, on her own terms and not a generalized top 40 success thing.
