CBS News reports the boy was taken to the hospital last week in the southern Kerala state with a high-grade fever and suspected brain inflammation. After blood tests, he was diagnosed with the Nipah virus and died Sunday. Officials are using contact tracing, quarantine and hospitalization on the 188 people who have came into contact with the preteen to prevent a wide-spread outbreak, CBS reported. Symptoms of the Nipah virus vary from asymptomatic to acute respiratory infection and — at its worst — encephalitis, a swelling of active tissue in the brain that can be fatal. The start of symptoms ranges from 4 to 14 days after exposure and there are currently no vaccines available to treat the virus. "There's no good treatment for it," Lednicky said. "They put you in the hospital, but there's really nothing much else they can do for you." Let’s not spread unnecessary panic. Yeah I just panic-Googled lol and you're right, this isn't anything new, even though it's scary. It can be spread by droplets, which I assume is why they are quarantining people that had direct contact), but it isn't airborne and doesn't spread as easily as something like Covid from what I gathered. Some viruses are good at killing but bad at transmitting Fortunately most of the worst and deadliest viruses are not super transmissible Makes sense tbh... in the past especially any virus that is very deadly AND transmissible simultaneously would kill all life in a given area and go extinct given there was less global movement Theres a few exeptions of course like mesles but as a general rule it seems mild stuff like a normal influenza or chicken pocks spreads like wildfire while deadlier stuff like Ebola or this epah virus are a little less transmissible Even the Sars outbreak of 2003 (or was it 2004?)... that coronavirus was MORE deadly than Covid19 with a higher death rate but on the flip side was easier to contain because it was not quite as transmissible as Covid19 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Yes it is very deadly which makes it harder to transmit, since symptoms develop quickly and the sick becomes bedridden, unlike covid, where most carriers just spread it unknowingly because there's no symptom.
