World's first 3D printed wagyu beef created by scientists in Japan

Scientists in Japan successfully 3-D printed a cut of Wagyu beef that looks just like the real thing. The team at Osaka University in Japan used three dimenstional bioprinting to replicate the cut's specific arrangement of muscle, fat and blood vessels.

They hope lab-grown meats could provide a more sustainable—and delicious—alternative to traditionally-raised beef.

“By improving this technology, it will be possible to not only reproduce complex meat structures, such as the beautiful sashi [or marbling] of Wagyu beef, but to also make subtle adjustments to the fat and muscle components,” study co-author Michiya Matsusaki said in a statement.

The study, published last month in Nature Communications, is the first to attempt bioprinting Wagyu beef—an expensive cut prized for its tenderness, flavor and delicate fat marbling.

This new beef isn’t the first bioprinted cut of cow—an Israeli company unveiled their 3-D printed ribeye steak earlier this year.

I'm not vegan, but it probably isn't, because as far as I know current methods for 3d printing meat require growing it from a real sample, taken from a real animal. I mean, it's way better than the alternative of killing the animal for a very finite amount of meat, but by definition it wouldn't be technically vegan.

from what i heard the most effective way of getting lab meat is animal slaughter so not really

but there are probably some alternatives idkk

if they are not cheaper i don't see any of the bigger companies caring enough to search for them tho

but if one day it was all cruelty free and worked like the real thing

maybe we could have some alternatives for feeding animals like cats or other carnivores, would be nice

Others have already answered but yeah it depends on how the material for it is procured. For example, if they are still killing animals to be able to produce lab/3D printed meat, it would still not be vegan. I think this is the case with lab-grown meats so far. They're definitely less cruel than getting meat directly from animals, but they're still not cruelty free. Personally, I still wouldn't eat them.
