New Zealand authorities said Friday they shot and killed a violent extremist after he entered a supermarket and stabbed and injured six shoppers.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the incident as a terror attack. She said the man was a Sri Lankan national who was inspired by the Islamic State group. She said he was well known to the nation’s security agencies and was being monitored around the clock.

Ardern said that three of those who had been stabbed were seriously injured.

The attack unfolded at about 2:40 p.m. at a Countdown supermarket in New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland.

Ardern said that because the man was under constant monitoring, a police surveillance team and a special tactics group were able to shoot and kill him within 60 seconds of the attack starting.

Not The Real Gaga

My blood always start to boil when I read aomething like: "he was well known to security agencies and was being monitored"

Like... Get him behind bars if you know someone is a danger to others?

I just went upstairs as the breaking news was scrolling across the TV. Apparently 3 are in critical condition and the police shot the criminal dead on the scene.

F.ucked up. Absolutely f.ucked up. We never used to have violent crime like this. There's been a lot more crime here recently including tonnes of cars being stolen and ram-raids in my city and robberies etc. I think covid has all the crazy people riled up

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

I totally agree. But I also don't think it's that easy. Until someone actually does something threatening they aren't allowed to lock someone up based on suspicion. But this senseless violence could have been avoided :toofunny:  it's a hard one

Hopefully this is not nearby your area. Please be safe.

I am saddened to hear the news.

At least he didn’t have guns. Think of how much more damage he could have done. This is why we need stricter gun laws in the U.S.

You can't send people to jail unless you have evidence that they are preparing to commit a crime. You can't jail people based on suspicion alone, even if well-founded.

I have friends from NZ. Gotta check up on them. Hopefully they are ok.

Until then, this is Elvira saying unpleasant dreams.

EXACTLY. It's exactly because of our gun laws that this wasn't a mass shooting.

Americans will bury their heads in the sand about it though and make up nonsensical reasoning like "if those people in the supermarket had guns they could've protected themselves" and "guns don't kill people, people kill people"

NZ just recently banning guns, in 2019, after devastating another terrorist attack. In a mosque.

But LBR, this person is only twisted fanatic that were inspired.

If this was by actual Daesh person, they are trained to make make shift weapon and bombs.  So even if fire arms are banned, they can always make it their own using household tools and caused chaos all the same. That's why toothpaste and other liquid are now only allowed get into plane cabin for certain amount. Cos these people made make shift explosives using it.

Babba the Hutt

I'm scared of the possibility of being outside, just doing your own thing, not bothering anybody and then someone stabs you, out of the blue :saladga: and I hate that I even feel the cut just by imagining it.

I do find it interesting how the events in Afghanistan are unfolding and now a terror attack in NZ just before the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

"The man, whose identity cannot be revealed due to court suppression orders, had arrived in New Zealand in October 2011 and became a person of national security interest in 2016, said Ms Ardern."

So they were waiting for him to commit a crime basically, kinda messed up. :wtf:

We've seen how much more damage they can do.

A person inspired by radical beliefs like this killed 49 people in a nightclub in Orlando and was in a standoff with police for three hours.

Still crazy how this dude hurt 6 others with a knife and was killed in a minute by police.

Whimsical bitch
