Introducing 'Generation Mute'

Experts have told the Daily Telegraph that, since teens and twenty-somethings are spending so much time on their phones, a ringtone isn't really necessary to alert them to an incoming call.

They also point to the rise of wearable tech, particularly among women, that means people are now alerted to incoming calls by vibrations on their wrists through Apple Watches or Fitbits.

Additionally, previous research by Ofcom discovered that twice as many 16 to 24-year-olds – who they branded "generation mute" – preferred messaging to phone calls.

In 2017, they reported that 36 per cent of this age group felt the former was the most important method of communication, while 15 per cent said the latter was.

Even millennials, the oldest of whom turn 40 this year, are keen to shirk phone calls.

A US study found that 80 per cent of this generation felt most comfortable communicating via text or online.

My voice is pretty high for a guy so phone calls scare me :billie: I also can't think properly when speaking compared to texting and messaging where I have all the time I need to construct a complete and concise statement :vegas:

I mean.. only sociopaths* leave their sound on for notifications and calls.. and don't even get me started on keyboard clicks!

Also the name fits, with how they all have had classes (from elementary school to college) where the need to be "on mute" is part of their daily life.

*unless they have a condition needing it.. but regular people in public, at the store, in transit, or whatever.. please mute your phone

I feel like there's this overblown drama about people preferring texts over calls. Maybe we're just realizing how useless phone calls are lmao. I still do them when there's something urgent or someone isn't answering my texts but otherwise I'd much rather text because it's much more practical. Also this is ignoring the fact that voice notes exist, which aren't exactly "mute".

As for notifications, my phone is almost always on mute unless I'm expecting a call/text/email/etc. I don't see the point of having it scream at me when I don't want to check it, and when I don't need loud notifications when it's in my hands or right next to me.

Soft, soothing, and succulent

I also think that having loud phones for no reason unless you HAVE to have them somehow is kind of rude.

I hate talking on the phone.

Unless it’s something urgent, just text.
