We all know nothing changes magically overnight when you turn 18, but that's the legal limit in most of the world, so the law revolves around that limit. If you didn't have that strict limit, then nothing could be done regarding legislation directed toward minors. People can still buy merchandise boo, they only need to do it though their parents if they're a minor. and do you seriously believe a 6yo was using their own money to buy this merchandise? no, it was their parents', so just advise parents to control their money more closely (something many parents don't even realise is a problem) and introduce legislation to control what advertisers can and can not do. it really is that simple. when someone spends money on merchandise or any kind of online activity, they're either using money they've made themselves with their own labour and time, or using their parents' money that the parents aren't keeping secure enough. i swear, y'all will do literally anything but enforce legislation on big corporations and organisations. not surprising when you've got a rampant neoliberal's wife in your profile picture. You're saying that I, a communist, would do anything except force legislation on big corporations? Lmao. A law like this one existing doesn't eliminate the fact big corporations should be taxed into oblivion. This law won't allow for influencers to pander to minors, for example, and will allow any expense to be claimed back by parents if made without their authorization. You're saying this is a "government overstep" because of "personal freedom" while simultaneously advocating for legislation directed at big corporations, which one could argue can also be classified as a violation of this "personal freedom" you're defending (in the context that the corporation is made out of people). So what is it? Former First Lady of the United States. Now card-carrying member of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

So what is it? legislation aimed at big corporations is never an infringement of personal freedom. the individual and the collective are two different things and the truth is, if corporate freedoms were the same as individual freedoms, then communism wouldn't even exist. any influencer who panders to minors has a management team, a merchandise team, an advertising team and everything in between, making them and their brand, by proxy, a corporation. aside from the fact that minors spending their parents' money without permission on influencer products is so minimal it's virtually a non-issue, many minors have the complete moral right and personal freedom to spend their own money on whatever they want and this law infringes upon that right. i find it odd that a self-declared communist would encourage limiting what an employed person can spend their own earned money on in order to try and shift the responsibility of the actions of actively manipulating corporations onto them. i really assure you, there aren't swathes of 6 year olds (in your own words) buying unhealthy amounts of merchandise without permission. Of course I would limit what an employed person can spend their money on. I wouldn't want people being able to buy weapons freely or, I don't know, hiring hitmen or something. I don't know about China's situation in particular, but the law exists for a reason. I don't get how you can think a law like this one can get passed without there being a real problem it addresses. The individual and collective are different things, you're right, but that doesn't keep ideologies like libertarianism from considering legislation aimed toward big corporations as a violation of personal freedom. In these types of cases, the collective should be the priority, instead of the individual, and a nationwide mandate will do just that. I don't trust people doing these things by themselves, as it was proven in the Western world (and other parts as well) time and time again a large chunk of people will make stupid decisions if not controlled by law. Communism believes in the supremacy of the collective instead of that of the individual, among other things of course, so legislating these kinds of behaviors is in line with my line of thought. And as I already told you, supporting a law like this doesn't take away the fact corporations should also be taxed into oblivion. It's not a binary. Former First Lady of the United States. Born This Way 1,817
So what I'm getting from the article is that in China, fandoms are a lot more aggressive in buying stuff that will help their stars on charts. "“chaotic” celebrity fan culture in June, focusing on behaviors that led minors to raise money, spend a lot, rumormonger, launch personal attacks, and invade privacy." Hmmm, interesting. Kinda reminds me of the MCYT and Kpop stans here but I guess it's more severe. I will say, it seems weird to me that people here would want this sort of government action. I think the banks and the government already have too much control, just look at the onlyf*ns stuff that just happened. You should ask yourself, if policies that police the internet like what China is doing are carried over into a Republican presidency, what do you think they'll try to curb online? I don't think the government should be allowed that kind of control, not the democrats or republicans. I guess some people's assh*les are just quivering for the government to come and dump a load in them. Supersonic 49,376
It also should be mentioned to contextualize all of this, that this move specifically stems from the Kris Wu rape controversy from a few weeks ago. A very famous Ex-K-Pop singer called Kris Wu that now promotes mainly in China (his birth country, he also holds Canadian citizenship) was exposed for sexually assaulting minors. He's currently arrested and awaiting his trial (which very possibly could end in a death sentence for him). As soon as the news broke, his Chinese fans went absolutely RABID online, spamming news boards, threating journalists, trying to raise funds to get Kris out of jail when he was arrested, some fanclubs trying to pay hush money to victims speaking up, which went viral and transcended the realms of the internet, and the unabashed rabidness and defending of pedophilia and rape became a political issue. Thank you for this context. Some people go around making threads and not elaborating on anything but this adds something to the conversation. In that case, yeah it's a good thing they're stepping in. I made the thread because I think it's a good overall idea regardless of context. But as I said, laws don't exist in a vacuum and saying this is pointless is assuming a pointless law can get approved by the Congress of some country, which is...lol Former First Lady of the United States. Supersonic 49,376
You also have to know: The minors of the fandoms who have that much disposeable money at hand of course are RICH kids (yes, you CAN be f*cking loaded in China). And y'all know how UNHINGED rich children can become, especially if parents just don't give a damn or even worse... enable them. And the Rich acting so unhinged to the point of public discourse starting of course would be of interest to a self-described communist government.
