China Bans Minors From Supporting Influencers

(Yicai Global) Aug. 27 -- As part of efforts to root out China’s “irrational fan” culture, the country’s cybersecurity regulator has moved to require celebrity agents to prevent minors from spending money on supporting the activities and buying the goods sponsored by their idols.

Websites and online platforms must clean up the illegal fundraising information published by fans and online gatherings of the underage are forbidden, the Cyberspace Administration of China said in a document issued on its official WeChat account today.

i mean i see why you'd support it but at the end of the day, i do think this is one thing that's healthy in moderation and is the responsibility of parents. overstep of government.

plenty of kids have a healthy relationship with the internet but we never talk about that.

This is not about kids and their relationship with the internet, it's about society and the problem of parasocial relationships. This is a step forward to solve something that shouldn't even exist in the first place, and there's no one better to do it than the government, which is the most powerful entity in any country, let alone China.

i agree with parasocial relationships not needing to exist and being unhealthy. but government overreach in the area of the internet has proven to be nothing but problematic and concerning in the past. there are other routes of solving this.

What are these other routes? We don't have all day, there's a whole generation (a couple in fact) that doesn't know of a world without the internet.

I get where they are coming from. It can be a really negative impact on ppl

 

But i still think its a little extra to outright ban it.

 

Its the kind of stupidity that ppl should still have a personal choice on. If u wanna blow money supporting a useless influencer u worship, its still ur money to blow at the end of the day

 

Ppl buying tabbaco ends up being even more harmful and a wasteful habit and as far as I know China hasnt banned that
