Mark Ronson says Gaga doesn't need auto tune!

The effect can be achieved regardless if the singer is on key or not by adjusting Autotune settings to their most extreme, which is what Mark Ronson has done in the video.

You can still hear the effect in the very beginning "I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive in", even though she's clearly on key because: the vibrato has been completely flattened, unnaturally so, (all voices have some natural vibrato and variation when you sing) and the change between notes is near instant, something the human voice is not capable of actually doing.

Autotune can actually be used more subtly so that it's mostly undetectable to fix a note here and there when it's sightly off, it's just become famous for the way it can be used to manipulate the voice to unnatural extremes.

I suspect there's still some manual pitch tuning in Shallow regardless as it's just become industry standard to have pitch corrected vocals, but very subtly done.

I just mean that when she does it stylistically it is SUPER obvious where like you said you can hear it here but it’s not quite as much as, say, Heavy Metal Lover.

Then again, she was speak singing through a lot of that so it might have picked up on that since standard speech is basically without tune hahaha

Oh do you mean the second verse of HML? Yeah the autotune effect is very noticeable there since she's basically talking aka not even trying to hold a note 😂

bloody g

Pretty sure Gaga uses it as an artistic choice, at least in Chromatica

You can hear on plastic doll and 911 (for obvious reasons stylistically LOL) but I actually think for the most part Chromatica is clear of it. She retains a LOT a of her vocal texture if you listen to songs like enigma, Alice, or ROM

The Shallow Trailer version is more polished, he should've played that instead of the live version.

still can't believe we never got even a leak of this studio version

the first verse in Alice sounds very pitched, which I personally love. I've always thought her voice sounded great with autotune, she obviously doesn't need it but it adds a glossy quality which works well especially in her earlier stuff. I think I remember her saying that in an interview once that she doesn't need it but it helps her vocals sit nicer in the mix. Then didn't she say a few years ago that she's never using autotune again so I don't know if she changed her mind with Chromatica or they used a different brand pitch corrector lol

It’s possible they’re doing really fine harmonies. That’s a common trick in pop and we know how found Gaga is of stacking her harmonies

Agree, but her using autotune on certain parts of certain songs can make it even better, so I agree she doesn't need it but I like it as well.

Honestly I don't know you can all tell the difference. I couldn't tell you the difference in producers either. When you all bang on about bad or boring production or whatever I'm like?? I either like it or I don't.

Surprised that Gaga wasn't involved in the series. I imagine she'd definitely say yes to a sitdown interview if they had asked.
