Actually yes, compare the written music for both songs & you’ll see the similarities despite the fact that you clearly can’t hear them (some people just aren’t musically inclined & that’s ok!)

"sounds nothing like" was too much, i should've said that they are a bit similar in some parts*

still not plagiarism

btw. some people are acting so shook by this, almost as if the whole radio was not full of reused samples from 10 years ago...

The problem is not sampling (even Gaga did this countless times) but not giving credits. And the whole pom pom squad thing is too suspicious to be coincidence (also her creativity director. Was following pps by the time the album was being created)

Honestly, pop music has always been intertext. With the internet and music databases it's much easier to catch overlap between imagery and sounds than before. I don't think anything on the record is intentionally plagiarized. She's drawing from a long (very musically simple) history of pop / rock in which similar ideas come about often or unintentionally music gets interpolated. In terms of imagery, she's working through very common teen girl ideas - cheerleaders, prom queens, ballerinas. There is bound to be overlap. She's the biggest rising star. Of course everyone wants a piece.

What’s wrong with her getting a push from Disney or something? She’s really talented, she can sing and writes her own songs

it’s not like she can’t do anything and people fall for her

I think she's obviously really talented, just not appealing to everyone. I listened to her album and can see why she has a following, but in my opinion, it just sounded like Gen Z angst. At 32, I'm clearly not going to relate.

It's interesting to note that Billie is 1 year older than Olivia and I love all of her songs including her new album. Just different styles of writing I suppose.

I'm 19 and don't relate to it. HER MUSIC IS NOT BAD AT ALL (before anyone come for my head) but it's not revolutionary or culturally impactful as everyone on the internet is stating. And this whole uncredited samples stuff hurts her image even more

i'm not saying it's 100% ok and she shouldn't have given anyone any credit

but people are acting like it's something so controversial and unusual

when it's happening everyday for years and no one cares

just an general observation

eh. that cruel summer thing is such a stretch. i was obsessed with both of the songs and never noticed a resemblance. crediting people for “work inspired” is ridiculous.

First person to say something rational in this site :applause:

but both olivia and billie have a awfully similar style of writting and singing, the difference is that olivia pushes more for a prefabricated teen pop punk sound, and now billie is going for it too :enigma:

Nah, I definitely wouldn't agree with that.

I could explain it but simply, Olivia's seems to be more capsulated of the teen experience. Billie has pushed through that and is talking about being abused, toxic relationships, mental health, suicide, and not that teens don't deal with that (I sure did) Billie's choice in lyrics, her vocal effects, and production, translate to an older audience (I.E. me lol) more seamlessly than Olivia.

I have friends older than me that LIVE for Paramore and that whole vibe. It's nostalgic, reminds them of their younger days. I would bet they really vibe with Olivia. I went through a goth phase in high school :billie: so I was more into metal and dark tings than punk

Just my opinion :zilla:

People who waste their time looking for excuses to discredit her disgust me.

But artists who plagiarize don’t? :billie:

I think she and her team had to drop this album as soon as possible while people were hyped about Olivia and just skipped asking about permissions:partysick:

Elvis Costello is fine with this

He gets it :applause:

All art is derivative and people just need to get over it tbh.

Olivia talks about the same stuff and with the same lens lol, brutal for example is about self-loathing and depression, you can't deny that songs like idontwannabeyouanymore have a essential teen lens and target, she has songs wishing her crush was gay so her ego is not damaged, or like happier than ever where she's just mad because her ex treated her badly...

It’s a reach for me. There are similarities but you can find similarities between all music. These examples are not super strong.

Also, the cheerleader thing has been done a million times over. They should give credit where credit is due and move on
